my boards too light!

no maybe its a good thing, one 4oz. bottom 2on top…diddnt sand through hot coat…and its my first attempt…finished sanding with 220. i just assumed my board would be alot heavier having never done it before. is it possible that my hot coat wasnt thick enough ?even though i havent hit the cloth maybe i havent tried hard enough! bassically besides it being much lighter than i expected , is it ok to stop sanding at 220? looks pretty good to me.

we used to add weight to our Cub Scout Race Derby cars, by drilling the bottom , adding some fishing weights and puddying it up. Something similar has been done in the past with the tow in boards. Do you have a drill or router?

Hey So how heavy is it, and what size is it? Plan on adding 3-4oz with glosscoat. Are fins glassed on? If not, plan on another 10oz to one lbs. Don’t plan on pushing thru any heavy waves. Watch out for deck dents/delams.

no its not a tow in. its 6’11 and almost as light as the ones in the store…im just wondering if its possible for my hot coat too be to thin? is the only way to tell if youve sanded through it? this is probally a stupid thing to worry about, i guess im just suprised.

what blank was it shaped from? generally if a lot of the outer core of the blank was shaped off the end result will be much lighter http://www.feraldave.com

‘’[…and weaker !.Herb

1 layer of 4oz what were you thinking. I would be surprised if that board lasts until the end of March.

yeah one layer 4oz. bottom and two layers 4 oz on the top…i mean i have always heard thats gennerally the way its done. but yeah now i kinda wish i would have used 6 oz instead, or 4 and 6…but its a little late now …i guess theres always next time…oh yeah i rode it today and allready have those tiny cracks in the deck, that you can only see if you hold it just right… you know what im talking about, but i dont think ive ever seen a board that dosent have these unless its new in the shop and even then ive seen some that have it. well anyway do you know what causes these?..ok this boards pretty long and more of some kind of cross between a thruster and a fun shape , so i should have been more focused on strength instead instead of weight…since i cant really expect a whole lot of short board performance since its size…but its still cool damn it…i made it!

No biggie, Bob. Think how much ya learned, and how good the next one is gonna be 'cos of what you learned… which will let the one after that be even better and the one after that and the one after that and…

sounds to me like your looking for someone to tell you what a awesome job you did. Don’t thnk you have become a master glasser with one board under your belt. you have a long way to go. The road is long and hard-traveled.

yeah thats it allright! I am the f**kin master…no im simply asking questions and trying to find answers , what the hell are you doing. my subject does seem to get people to read it though, wondering what the hell im talking about.

bob, three things…enjoy it, enjoy it and enjoy it. As you sort of said, it’s the best board you ever made, so just get out on it and have fun. And if it breaks…you learn for next time. At least you are doing it! No such thing as a backward step at this stage. Good on ya!

I still think Bob should drill some lead shot into the bottom.
