My dad's Plastic Fantastic

New member here. I dug out my late father’s Plastic out of the rafters while helping my mom move and thought I’d share it here. They/we lived in HB in the 60’s/70/s where he was a regular at the pier. He grew up in the South Bay before moving to HB and picked up this board in 67 or 68. It’s a 8’0" pin. I’ts also the first board i stood up on (North Side of the pier)

More than likely 1969, or 1970.      Quite likely glassed by recently deceased Swaylock’s member, Mike (Kokua) Williams.

I was born in June of '70 and he had it before I was around. The serial number reads 2785. Thanks.

 Good on you for posting it Milehi. Looks like it’s still in pretty decent nick for its age.

Lots of memories there for you.

Cheers!

Without more pics it’s a little hard to pin down, but Bill T is correct. No older than a '69, and more likely 1970

That number may very well mean …year     1972,  production number  85.        More than one surfboard company used ‘‘coded’’ numbering systems.      Transposing the year number, was commonly done.

Nice classic shape that would probably surf great today.  But maybe better as a wall hanger for you?  Nice memories, for sure.

Milehi, I still have my 6’2" Plastic Fantastic modified round tail, purchased in 1973 for a song ($65, used, post-summer clearance), and it’s every bit as much fun to ride now as it was then. Still in great shape, too.  Take your dad’s board out, you’ll have a blast.

That’s awesome. I hope Kokua did shape it. He’s still contributing to this day!

Kokua glassed for PF.

Thank you guys. I added some more photos. The board came with a clear Waveset fin that is now yellow, cracked and broken. One question i have is has anyone seen another PF lam like this one? For now, this is a wall hanger, in the garage unfortunately. I live in Big Bear and don’t get the time to get to the to the beach these days too often. When I do I ride a 6’4" quad fin fish by The Swift Movement.

After seeing the above 3 photo’s, the outline and the finbox, I’m solid in my opinion that’s a 1969 board.      You have a family treasure.

I talked with my mom today. She told me this was his last board he bought before us kids arrived. They were poor and even sold her Greek to pay rent in '74. Not until the 80’s did he buy new boards; mostly Takayamas. Donald and Guy, which i still have two of in the garage, both nose riders from the early 90’s. Mom has a black and white photo of my dad with the Plastic under his arm standing at the water’s edge with his back to the camera (and flipping off the camera). It was taken in '69 while she was pregnant with me. It’s packed but I’ll dig it out before it’s lost to the ages and share it here.
