My first board shaped this year...EPS

I finally got back into my shaping room and mowed out another Stand Up Beach Boy board out of 1 lb EPS. I got the blank with a Herex stringer from a really cool guy named Charlie. I like this 1lb EPS stuff! Charlie will do wood veneer on it for me so I’m stoked he can hide all my little Boogies!!! Hahaha!!! I haven’t shaped since last October so this was really fun! I made it really flat deck, flat bottom to V in the tail, some concave for nose riding, and basically just eyeballed most of it… I’m no craftsman… Just someone who likes to surf and experiment!

9’-3" x 27-12" x 4-1/2" Looking nose to tail…

Uncle D… I know I was supposed to call you but I’m still learning how to shape… I don’t want you to learn all my bad habits!

Right ON!!

Charlies a really cool guy and after he puts the veneer on your board its gonna be super strong!!

Looks great!

How are you guys going to do the veneer? Since you shaped the rails you’re planning to overlap the rails with the veneer?

Aloha Carve Nalu - It must be exciting building your own boards when you need one. 1 every 6 months. The wood will be bitchin! Imagine 500 / week…26,000 boards / year.

Charlie is a really nice guy… I was down there today and we were throwing around a bunch of cool ideas for future stuff… Hey J… I’ll be giving you a call for some RR products to glass some others I plan on shaping… K-den…

Thanks! I’m not exactly sure how he will finish the rails. I think there is more mention of the “hows” in the Wedding board thread that Uncle D started…

Call me, im going to have all kinds of fiberglass cloths available too. Kevlar/carbon fiber strips, impact glass and even texallium as well as 4oz and 6oz fast4 and fast6 Aerialite. Mahalo!!!

J,

I was thinking about our conversation and I’m all stoked! I need to clean up my shop if I’m gonna glass in there again. I just ordered a total of 6 blanks for me and a few for friends. As soon as I get them I’m gonna be mowin them out and I’ll make that call to you to pick up the Resin Research Epoxy… Thanks!

Charlie normally overlaps the rails with balsa veneer. Hes the only guy I know thats figured out how to get the balsa to wrap cleanly around the rail.

J,

I’m in the middle of cleaning up my shop… What a freaking MESS!!! Dirt Bike stuff mixed with canoe stuff, surfing stuff, glassing stuff, tools, toys, bicycles, and basically years worth of crap! At least I’ll have room to glass something afterwards… Ones things for sure… I NEED A BIGGER SHOP!!

Aloha Carve:

Very nice. You can shape you multi-talented buggah! If you want to try shaping a 12’3, I got a blank for you to play/practice on. If you need help glassing, I am there for you on the weekends.

As far as the rails, the old windsurfer shapers use to cut out the template, shape the bottom, skin the bottom, shape the bevel on the bottom rails then the deck and rails and finish with skinning the top and rails. Boy that sounds hard but it made a clean blend. They also use high density foam and not a veneer.

Mahalo,

Thanks for the info. I look forward to seeing how it turns out.
