My board turned out better than i thought…
I wound up making 5ft 5 fish board (since im only 4ft 10 its still kinda big)
My mistakes were…
i took a chunk out of the railand had to go from a 22 inch thick board to a 20 1/2 inch which didnt work out that bad.
on the glassing i had 3 air bubbles, but i sanded them down and went over them again
The fin rope didnt reach the end of the skeg hahahahaha but anyway i added a little more rope and it turned out to be pretty sturdy
when i was sanding down the fish tail i kinda took the hot coat off along with the first coat of resin, but i fiked it up with som fiberglass and resin....
and those were my only mistakes.
After all of this i took it out on a 3ft day (its a twin fin) I couldnt really snap the board but i just carved out the wave which was fun as anything. Any coments or anything like that.
Hey billysean,
I have a comment. Way to go, Bro! Not too many things better than riding a board you made with your own hands. Chipfish is going to be asking for photos.Mike
I’d rather carve than snap anyways. Post some picss.
22 inch wide does NOT turn well especailly if you are a small guy, even up to 140lbs. i made a 5 foot fish i made it wayyyy to wide i think it was 22
But my 22 1/2 inch 5-10 fish turns as good and cuts back better than my 21 inch 6 footer. Mike
“Chipfish is going to be asking for photos”
uh huh … (yes , please , if you have any … cheers !)
Meanwhile , here’s my 5’5 fish , which didn’t float me AT ALL … being that I am now 5’9 3/4 (yep , I re-measured myself , too!) and 155 lbs , and 44yo .
I wish I could give it to you to surf …
(it’s 5’5" x 19 1/2" x 2 3/8" , and has a concave deck . )
…if you or your family or friends ever come to Perth , west oz , it’s YOURS , buddy ! ["Hicksy’'s daughters don’t use it any more , as he has made a few boards for them since .And, the tail is getting mangled, from them banging it on doors , cement , tables, etc. (They also now have foamies , as they have joined the local surf lifesaving club. )
Fishtails + young kids = too much time spent doing ding repairs…
