This winter me and my dad decided to try making a HWS together we live on the east coast and its harder to get woods like redwood, so we decided to use maple for the spar and ribs, pine for the planking and mahagony for the rails. I know it sounds like a extremly heavy board, but we’ve been chambering and drilling out as much as we can, and because the wood is so strong, it seems to be alright. Heres some pictures of what we’ve done so far…
heres the maple frame
the mahagony rails
this is my dad working on the rails and the frame, it took a long time for us to be able to match the notches in the rails with the ribs
Dude! Looks bulletproof! I promise I won't snake ya!
Looks like the same way I build my redwood rails.
I think its very cool that your dad is supportive of your surfing. Tell him next on the agenda you'd like a longboard/beginner's shape - for him. Age is no excuse!
haha thanks yeh hes pretty awsome and hes a great carpenter…but he has alot of fun bodysurfing and boogerin…we started using handplanes last summer and i think he might be hooked on that
Looks pretty good. Love a winter project like this.
Would it be possible to route out the inside of the solid rail?
Removing a 1/4 inch wide strip to the depth of, say 3/8 inch, for the entire length of the inside of that rail would save some weight and give you a bit spring.
yeh i would love to do that cause we havent glued the frame in yet, its just sitting in it. We were thinking of doing something like that earlier but with a drill, the router idea is really good though
