My First Intentional Asymmetrical Board :)

Shaped this today, 5’11" x 19 3/4" x 2 and something…

Im planning on doing a twin fin setup on the toe side of the board (goofy footer) and a Quad fin setup on the heel side.

Does anyone have any fin ideas for this, pretty excited to try this out , do I measure the twin setup and the quad from the longest point of the tail or do I make the fin setup asymmetrical as it were also.

Measuring the fins from their corresponding tail lengths seems to make sense to me but dont want to make too many guesses…

Heres the pics one more time:

Awesome.  Look forward to ride reports on this for sure!

Longest part of the tail. Like your glueing two halves together.

I want to ride it.....

Cheers Billy, makes sense to me too just thought id see if I can get some consensus before I start marking fins out…

Steady on pridmore its not even glassed yet !

Nocean, cool looking board! I've made a couple, both wider than yours and placed the fins off each respective tail. They both go really good. I doubt you can go wrong either way. If you're not sure, you can glass the fins on. That way you can grind them off if you don't like the way it rides and try setting them in a different spot. I did the toe in pretty much the same either side, maybe a touch less  toe on the keel fin (longer rail and frontside) rail.

Nice one! The Asymm I made ended up working better than I ever thought, especially front-side (keel fin side). I really liked the long drawn out bottom turn provided by the longer, straiter rail and the keel fin…then the quick release as I transition off the top to the shorter more curved quad rail with quad fin set up. Nice!

Hey Nocean,

Are you goofy or reg foot.  I am planning on making one myself this spring.  Can’t wait to hear the ride report.  Nice looking shape.

Would also like to hear how you glass the tail, as far as cuts and lapping goes.

Hi, good to hear Surfthis, I have toed all the fins in same too and done my usual quad setup on the heel side, cant wait to try it…

Entropy, sounds good, thats what im hoping!

Yaar43, im a goofy footer so shorter rail line and quad setup on my heel side on my forehand. Its a bit more rockered than boards I have been riding recently , more performance orientated.

Just taking it for glassing this week as im too busy to glass all my boards but will keep posting pics, and ride reports as soon as I get it out there. Be good to get some photos if possible:)

Nocean,

that looks really nice! We’ve been playing with a bigish flexy twin fin on the toe side and it’s working really well. Definitely post some shots when it’s done- I’ll get them to Ekstrom, he loves seeing this stuff. Here’s a couple of new ones, one from Carl and one from Ryan Burch

Consafos,

wow cool looking boards, the second ones pretty interesting, its almost symmetrical again or mirror imaged, Ive done my quad fins  more spaced and not as ‘in line’ as the setup on Carls board.

handy spot for a power plug too, on the floor ? :)

I have essentially made a 5’8 quad board on my heel side and a 5 '11" Keel fin on the other, will post pics when its glassed, cheers for the feedback.

Hi guys,
here it is glassed and ready to ride, hopefully post some pics and stuff when I get a chance, Fin setup is lacking a true keel template fin which im waiting for so in the meantime im going to ride it with the Butterfly style Large Twin as pictured:

Here it is ready to surf, got a fcs Keel toeside:

board looks primo bro.keen to hear how she goes!, did terry from the fibreglass shop in hamilton email you a shapers price list yet?

antony

Hey yeah happy with how its come out, heading to indo in a month so let you know how it goes ,left mainly:)

Havnt got any mail from him yet but will keep it in mind if I need some stuff to contact him, cheers

Hi , back from trying this out in a variety of surf, pretty pleased with the overall performance of the board, surfed waves from the 2 foot mark up to 5 foot plus on it and found the best setup for the fins was actually a large m7 size side fin for the heel side. I think the big keel was just too much fin, it went ok in bigger stuff but the m7 was a better allround fin.
If I make another, cause I reckon i can improve the concept, I will do a more subtle asymmetry and do a staggered quad setup, placing the heel side quads a bit further back towards their tailside if that makes sense. I think more fins will make it a smoother ride and more forgiving with the right fins…
Heres a pic of me riding it on a small day:

I’m interested in you fin suggestion. If your a goofy isn’t the keel on your toe side and not your heal side? I wasn’t sure if when you suggested the M7 fin you were talking about the quad side or the keel side. But then you said the keel fin was to much fin so you must mean replacing the keel with the M7 right? I ask because I was thinking like you of making an asymmetrical shape with two different quad fin set ups… and stay away from the slow reacting keel fins. I’d also love to see the next board and hear about how it works if you do that.

*Also- does anyone have any thoughts on how these asymmetrical boards work when they are going strait…in either direction (front or back side)? Don’t they pull to one side…the quad side? That thought seems to stop me from making one as the idea of a strait running board with two different fin setups seems un-ballanced. Maybe a good reason to do two fins on both sides?

Hi Billy,

Yeah sorry the Keel is on my Toe side, just on your other thought thats pretty much what i was thinking too, I noticed a “twitch” a couple of times when transitioning from heel to toe in other words on the flat. It could have been the quads pulling a bit more on the flats or something to do with the space between, thats why I think a more subtle version with four fins will work better maybe a couple of inches longer on the toe side, with the fins set back only a little like half an inch to an inch different…
