My last build.

So on seeing Bill T’s thread recently of a beautiful board that unfortunatly took 4 pages to reveal a photo I present a bunch of pictures of a less beautiful board in a thread that will be lucky to get 5 replies.

The board was made to be a gap filler between my numerous 6-4s and a mini gun 7-3. A step up. Something I’ve needed for years now and am thankful to have. I took the measurements of both boards and kept the center width and evenly split the difference on the nose and tail width at 12 inches. WP is an inch and a half behind center. Final dims are 6-10 x 20 x 2 5/8. T 14 3/4 N if I recall correctly is 13

I’ll start with a template drawn onto the blank.

Here’s a shot of the final rocker and rough foil. I went back after this and cleaned up the pregnant deck. No pic of the final foil.

Bottom roll to single to double to flat, I think I retouched the rail tuck after this shot.

The dressed bottom. I did a reverse cutlap with this one for added fun.

Lam deck

Lam bottom after cutlap.

Deck hotcoat #1

#2 i like the frozen waterfall of resin.

Finished board

Here’s 1.

looks good, green tint is a bitch too do. What’s up with the waterfall of resin…did you run out of tape?

I just use the grinder. Saves tape and I hotcoat under the rail so It ends up flat anyway. Tape is mega expensive where I am and I can re-use the discs over and over. I should have waited to give the resin a pass with the squeegie but dinner was calling.

In the end, it’s about the board.     The journey, is a process that cannot be captured in photo’s.   Only the shaper can savor that.

Very true and well put. Hold on…my cat is making a funny face… I just had to take a selfie with him. ! I’ll probably get a few likes on Facebook! I’d like to see some more pics of your board, Bill since I am nowhere near California and don’t have a reason to visit.

One more to go…

Very nice outline.

So why is this your last build?

You giving up? Moving inland? Becoming a hodad?

Love that outline.  How much tail rocker?

This is response 7, so you got more than 5 and the board looks great.  Need me to send you a box of tape?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdemFfbS5H0 Nice! I like the green.

classic , ben !

but why is it your LAST build ?

I hope you are not giving up shaping ??

I’m just glad someone else FINALLY put up a photo on mr. talk it up’s thread …

  cheers

Its funny, but I’m the exact opposite.   I’m always way more interested in the process than the product.  I will agree on the value of savoring the process - one of the reasons I choose difficult builds (hollow wood boards), and use mostly hand tools on my foam boards (when I own plenty of power tools), is that I like to savor the process.

Its hugely therapeutic to me to invest my time and sweat equity into creating something personal, as opposed to plugging in the power tools and getting to the finished product in a hurry.  No disrespect to the professionals who have a family to feed, that’s what I do in my day job, but I love coming home after work, and having the luxury of handcrafting something at my own pace, in the quiet of my little shop, using the tools of my own choosing.

Hence, I like “build” pictures way more than finished product pictures, especially when its a craftsman in a shop doing the building, not an assembly line of machines or sweatshop drones.  You’d be amazed at the things I learn from “in process” photos!  (and I guess I learn some from pictures of shiny surfboards too, when the photos show all angles, with oblique lighting)

You do have to have thick skin to post pictures of a build in progress.  Let’s face it, we all know there is nothing more tempting to some people than taking a cheap shot from the keyboard, mocking or ridiculing someone else’s tools or methods or workshop, to try and build themselves up to the peanut gallery - which I guess is why I have such a huge appreciation for those, like insanecutback, who are willing to share the details and in-progress photos of their projects.

Everyone’s methods are a bit different, and each person who posts up brings something unique to the table.  What I love about Swaylocks!

Yes

Nice build insane.

wow.  a BOX of tape?

insanecutback, are you hearing this?  an offer too good to refuse!

life, the universe, and everything?  maybe he meant to say “my most recent” build.  Although, if I didn’t have tape, I might stop making boards.  That and single edge razor blades.  Oh yeah, and my thermos…

I made a mistake on my title. I wanted to write “latest” I’m not giving up shaping at all. In fact I’ve started my next project and have one more in the planning after this.

Greg Tate, I appreciate your offer to send some tape. I have 9 rolls from my last visit to Hawaii so I should be fine for quite a while to come. I really do however appreciate the thought. I’ll get to measuring the rocker on the board a bit later but if memory serves me it is 2 3/8T and 5 1/2 N.

I’m just cheap with tape and other supplies and anyway as I figure you dont need tape anyway for a deck hotcoat since it can be knocked down with the grinder in a shorter time than it takes to tape it up and babysit until you can pull the tape.

As far as posting pics go I kinda miss the old days over here when people would post pics at their current stage and ask advice. I also used to love the range of replies…Some were better than others. Or the step by step tutorials. Anyway I think there are a couple of other build threads in progress no to keep our eyes on.
