Bar code, serial number, glassing logs, who cares about that. A nonissue. I have a friend who has a barcode tatoo on his arm. He is definitely a popout, however.
Rusty makes surfboards??? That is so cool!!! I gotta go get me one to go with my wardrobe of poorly fitting Rusty pants and rad t-shirts.
...Rusty barely can surf...Im not here to be against the mainstream shapers
but reality is that, reality
and to name a mainstream one that likes to surf and do surfing and still shapes: Linden
That’s not true… Rusty rips for a 6’5" 300lb guy. He’s a very competent surfer. I wouldn’t want to burn him at his spot.
Gary rips too. He’s still shredding big-ass waves around the world. Check the article in this month’s TSJ about shapers who make big-wave boards. Dick Brewer leads the article and Gary ends it.
Speaking of… Dick just shaped Rusty a couple big-wave guns… at Linden’s shop. There will be an article in the next issue of TSJ. Oh… and Dick likes to surf too.
There are a lot of shapers that rip. They’re the one’s that make the best boards as far as I’m concerned. Guys like Michel Junod, Bob Pearson, Bill Stewart, Danny Hess… they shred and make boards that work.
…my answer was in response to this sentence: “I still think he is a surfer and a shaper at heart…but being big has not had the best effect on that brand.”
Being Big…as in one of the big three surfboard manufactures …and…at one time one of the big three clothing manufactures. I think the clothing side and going so big hurt his brand. The guy can shape…Period. I say he is a surfer at heart because when they were looking for a rep Rusty tried to make sure he had a surfer as the rep.
I still think he sold out into the pointed nosed twig is the only surfboard mentality for most of his career. Light glassed run off in mass. Like I said though…I have had a few customs from Rusty and the guy does know how to make a functional surfboard. I don’t mind him making the money either…but for awhile…I think he lost his focus. Had to buy into the hype. Most do unfortunately.
…I not tried to disrespect Rusty s shaping skills
I talked about surfing skills, but like Tomatdaum and Kendall show, there s more than one view…
however I doubt that the shaper that shaped that board here and also most of Rustys are no more than finishers right now
may be only does 100% H shaping for some friends or may be not
Im not an advocate of these guys but talking about mainstream shapers I have more respect for Linden or even A. Merrick than Rusty
Linden proved he can hand shape different types of materials and platforms that work, he can surf, he can design, he in the past instructed several guys in different places like Brazil or Japan, a couple of shaping “secrets” (no internet times…)
the guy have time, but spend it right in the water
Merrick seems to have a more open mind approach (in the shape area) than Rusty
Have you had it in the surf yet? I wonder about the ride…

Agree with this mostly. I don’t think Merrick is really into the experimentation with shapes outside the pro arena. The retro and experimental stuff are just part of whats happening right now.

Wow! You’re opening a can of worms with that one.
Hey dlock,
thanks for asking - board works great. Summer board, 8’6 x 22 1/4 superlite epoxy longboard with a single to double and a 2+1 set-up. Loose as a goose and fast down the line.
And the bar code continues to provide a fair chuckle for da boyz and gals
