My MODIFIED "Jet Fish " is now ready for glassing!

Sorry I don’t have software to make pic files smaller. But I’m done! Hope you like my shape! I thank everyone who offered tips, advice etc…

MODZ:

I put a put a medium vee with a light dished concave third of board’s length w vee, but flattish out tail block.

Rails are LOW N HARD, but a bit of rolled edges in nose, behind fins rails are hard. Tucked under edges from nose to fins ‘foiled.’ Flat bottom w slight roll near nose. That’s it! Other then it’s going to have four fins on it! Hope you fish fans like my – MJF4!

THIS NEW PIC IS A MORE THINNED RAIL. IT NEEDED A BIT MORE OFF THE TOP.

Length: 5’11"

Width: 21"

Thickness: 2 5/8"

Nose: 16 3/4" Tail: 15.5"

Tail width at block: 10" depth of fish tail cuts 5"

*low hard rails

*light concave vee in tail; Actually MORE LIKE A DOUBLE THRU FINS!!!

  • dead flat bottom

*extra tail kick for maneuverability

*lowish nose rocker

*Fish tail QUAD FINNER! Enjoy.:))

I just have one tiny bit of dremelin between my fish tail cuts. About ten mins. But I’lll get that before glassing. I think I’ll do a different tail shape next time…fish tails are a bitch!

Looks like a fun board, Jim.  Mike

thanks -Mike! I just screened the upper rail to blend rails into deck more… pics coming!

More on modz: I set my vee length from tips to about 1/3 board, and the concaves.thru the vee is about the same, but there’s a subtle double concave also… the vee spine is defined, but I softened the spine to enhance speed…plus we got a smooth pronounced kick behind fins. My concaves on the vee panels is subtle, and it fades out almost flat at tail block. Also my rails are about 1/8" diameter, but gradually softens a bit of a progressive fattening rolled edge under nose area…It should fly!

Man, the concave vee wasn’t too difficult! I took my surform and carved a straight line between my vee panels, and used a flexy sanding pad, and would block In a scrub to dish it out…

Note: I also flipped the tip a bit bcuz I got a spoke shave now… it sure makes a coo nose. The nose is a modern eagle beak nose.

Very Cool.  You had in mind what you wanted and you pulled it off.  You have to see the board in the blank.  And then “whittle” until you get there. Lowel

Thanks -Lowel! Big thanks goes to you for giving me advice on down rails! I did what you said.THESE RAILS ARE NICE !! I did the down rails end - to - end, and did kind of a flat section at the rear…

Now I gotta get sum quad fins. I’m taking a break on fish board’s for a bit…Swallow tails are tons easier…I prob do a rounded square tail, or a round pin, or long board? Definitely do a concave of sorts! Thanks man.

looking good!

You got the hawk nose of the old down rail boards and looks like plenty of meat on the bone.  See if you can get a photo of the rocker profile.  rom all the post here I can see that you have learned a few lessions Nothing like haveing the best of the best give you advise.  Glass it surf it and report back.

There’s not much to say? I don’t have a rocker stick yet, but I just buy a blank that is close to what I want. Then add sum kick,.maybe sum bit more flip n nose. Sorry, about the pic, I don’t have a holder…FYI I just used a Arctic blank (Larry Mabile Fish Blank -a six two). I just freestyle in kick etc… however I do it. Later I’ll build a rocker template.

FYI - I’m getting old -I’m fifty goin on 51, so I left a tad more foam to paddle well. My tail is thin in rear for added loose ness.

Sweet looking board Jim!

Grino - thanks ! I been pushing myself to get out and do it when I can…Anyway, I’m pretty happy w my rails, nose tip design, rails, and tail kick. I think I could have thinned the nose a bit more, but I want paddle power @ my age…I put in slight double concave in front of fins- flow n into my defined vee between my fins, and ran a line straight through the middle
Of my vee panels, and hollowed it out to the spine and rail…also blended it out n flats…it’s almost flat off tips n tail, but I cupped the centers and left a dish… the concept: a bit of lift ,and hold…hope it works!? It’s just a vision I had while sanding… something tells me -it’s going to be INSANE!!!

To measure rocker you just need a long section of aluminum channel about 6 foot should do. Should be pretty cheap to buy. Look up Bill Barnsfield thread on how to use it. The guy is another master of the craft.

Thanks man. Yeah, I’ll go get one at ace or home depot.

Arts -it just dawned on me I forgot to finish screening my bottom rails.I Slightly rounded the edges and rolled the nose edges sweet.it’s hard, but has a sliver more off for give…also, I put a slight rolled edge near the nose, and in the nose…in a nutshell, I started w block at 45 and barely cut anything off tail…gradually going to 1/8" @ center…then it progressively fattens out nose… then screen w care.

I think it frees up the nose from catching rail?

I’ve had a board that was as evenly rolled edge 1/4" and harden in the tail…

I’m glad you like the beak nose! Mine’s not real thick. It’s more for strength and looks. I just put planer on low cut, and cut about a two n , half inch angle towards tip, but shy about top of stringer…that way I nn have rm to design it…

Guy’s -the Arctic blank curves r great! But go with a higher density - this yellow is weak! Easy to shape tho.

couldn’t have said it better myself…good job my friend!!!

Yup. While I haven’t had any shaping lessons, I “just figured it out” aft talking to shapers, learning on swayz, reading about it online, using my own ideas etc… but I did envision board in blank, and whittled away. I think doing it ‘steps’ helps you not screw up as much. Example: plane blank to thickness one day, the next do bottom contours,.next cut beak, turn rails etc… while it was difficult using a stock Hitachi planer, dunno how I developed some of my own planing techniques? But thinning my blank was just normal angled pp planer techniques…the rest was similar, but I use my own personal techniques to do rails etc…how I learned: just by doing what I thought was right-even though I didn’t really know…I think I was “shaping foam” into what I envisionedl inside the blank -like Mcding said… plus I learned how to turn a rail -Mcding bcuz I first was and still am impressed by his shaping style. He was posting on a thread ‘Rail bands’, and I posed a question about rail bands… anyway, he shared some ideas and i applied the concepts to my rails…and man! Hold n my board under my arm -feels pro!No joke.that said, I learned a lot from everyone I know on swayz, and each are excellent designers and shapers in their own individual ways. But yeah, the mind - through the body, and desire to do the best you can with the tool’s you have -make it happen. Never say you can’t, never think failure is an end point. It’s a experience, a place to learn, grow and figure it out. Learn from your mistakes, and use them as stepping stones to the next level. Gentlemen-thanks MUCH! Now I gotta make me a logo, and get my pigments to glass the mango green swirl job I want on bottom, deck / I dunno wth I’ll do yet. Order n fins from Rainbow fins for quads. Now let’s all build the best boards humanly possible w whatever tools and techniques we have!!! Good times. Stay stoked.-Jim

HERE’S A PIC OF MY TAIL CONCAVES ETC… IT WILL GIVE YOU CLUES…CHECK IT OUT!!!
