My morning surf with a Legend.......

This morning I was out at tiny Laniakea playing around with my 12 footer and SUP when I noticed this tall older guy surfing very good on a longboard looking familiar. Just he and I getting some small little crumblers for quite aways… Once he started talking it confirmed it was Nat Young with his heavy Aussie accent. Nice guy and he told me he was there with my friend Mike whom he goes skiing with… Then my friend Mike comes out with his 4 man canoe. Next thing Nat’s in the canoe getting rolled with Mike and another guy… Nat had this huge smile on his face as they were riding the waves… They were yelling at me to go and I was yelling at them to go on waves… After one really good flip they went in. It was pretty comical… They all looked like little kids having a blast in the canoe… Hehe!!! Nat still rips too… I was tempted to say to him, “Hey, you look familiar, aren’t you Miget Farrelly?” Hehehe!!

i geuss it’s still pretty early over there eh? sounds pretty cool.

sounds cool

i was just watching him on “crystal voyager”

the other night

“where’s ya mate Midget ? … he surfs waaay better than you , Nat”

then , duck …

Met him, briefly, around thirty years ago, when he was doing stuff for Weber, and he was like that then, hell of a stoked, nice guy. glad to see it’s not changed. doc…

A couple of years ago my wife captained a team that surfed in the Bic One Board contest at Secos. She got Nat to fill our 50+ spot, and the guy does still rip. We all surfed our first heat together as a team. I know I was stoked, but you should have seen the groms. I think we all upped our surfing that day due to Nat’s stellar performance. Nat ended up in the Finals going head to head w/ Taylor Jensen from Coronado, and almost beat him. What a cool moment!

A clean, 4-6 foot South swell transformed this event into a contestant’s, spectator’s and organizer’s dream, as Secos reeled off it’s peeling rights with virtually windless, consistent sets throughout the weekend. In attendance, and heralding the contest as one of California’s best, an entourage of legendary surf contestants, including Australian Nat Young, Mickey Munoz, Steve Walden and Henry Ford, were joined by today’s and tomorrow’s longboarding all-stars Joel Tudor, Jimmy Gamboa, Devon Howard, Jay Moriarity, Josh Mohr, Dane Perlee, and youngster Taylor Jensen, whom all thoroughly enjoyed the festive weekend.

Yeah, he was very friendly. At first I just thought wow, that older guy surfs good… Then he did a cutback and it was just like a bunch of pictures I’ve seen of him with his arms raised but bent at the elbows… When we started talking his accent was so heavy I could barely understand him. When my friend Mike came out with the canoe things got really fun… I was telling Nat about the swell hitting tomorrow but he had to leave tonight… Oh well… Maybe I’ll hook up with them one day in the snow…

I used to work with Nat at Bennett Surfboards back in the late ‘70’s. He was shaping his pin tail single fins and I was working as a sander. He was a nice guy but led me astray a bit! Too much time spent down at the old Dion chemical factory breaking the law. Didn’t help I was getting paid per board!

Had a memorable surf with him inside Sydney Harbour in a huge cyclone swell. 6’+ dodging moored yachts as you surfed! Way cool!
