My new board- feedback please

Hello, thanks everyone for all the help when I end up in a bind. After reading countless posts in the archives and current boards, I decided to just go for the EPS-Epoxy board for fun. I have made 3 other boards which all came out pretty good. This board was my second airbrush attempt that came out much better than anticipated. I use 2 6oz E on top and 1 6oz E on bottom with Greg’s AWESOME Resin Research resin with Additive F. It was pretty cold here in Florida when the board was made so the resin had plenty of time to go off without any problems (except for the nose - if you can notice a little black dot on the bottom of the nose it is the end of a cheezy paintbrush i jabbed into the board to keep the fiberglass mat from coming unwrapped around the rail). The dimensions are 5’10" 2 1/8" thick 11 1/2" nose 19" width (about 3" back) 14 1/4 tail with a squash tail and a single to double concave. futures fin system was the choice for fins. This board rockets through Central Florida crappiness with ease and has lots of speed. I love Gregs resin and I am ADDICTED to making board. Thanks for all the help! -Brett.

Very nice job Kwicky, that’s a really nice shape too. What did you use for the artwork?

I’m doing my 2nd foam board (after a synapse of 27 years) in epoxy as well. Can’t get RR + F here but I have to agree that more time to get everything right is well worth it.

Can you post a piccie looking from the tail to the nose along the bottom?

again, well done.

cheers

Hicksy

Very nice…

Great spray- Like the Curran model by CI on the deck with added details. Are your other boards all epoxy ? This is very addicting.

my other three boards were polyester. This board came out significantly lighter than my last poly board, even with the heavier glassing schedule. It is really crazy how light you can get a board with eps and epoxy. My next board may have heavier glass (maybe 3 6oz tops) to get a sort of poly feel (but it may be too stiff). The longer setting times of the epoxy (i used fast hardner but in about 70F) allowed me plenty of time to get the glassing really tight and remove the excess resin and create an awesome board. I can’t wait till the next board is started.

Next board is started ! The comment from a true addict. Me too. Did you go thin with your epoxy board ? What was it like to shape EPS ? I saw some at Keith’s gathering and thought it was kinda funky stuff, like the old foamey’s we used to surf on in the summer time. This was the stuff from Home Depot though so I dont know the different types out there. DR

DR its great your already starting your next board, you don’t waste any time do you.

How’s that finger coming along, does’nt sound like it’s holding you back any.

Woody I’m finishing board #2 which has been shaped for about three weeks then airbrushed and glassed by me. I just put the FCS plugs in so sanding is next. I was in the process of making a template for #3 when I wasted my finger. So now I am in no hurry to make #3 until someone test #2. But out of bordom, (I’m limited with the amount of work I can do) I may just make some boards till this thing heals up.

Kwik,

How much time did the fast hardener give you in 70F ? I’m gonna be ordering some of the RR soon and I’m trying to decide between fast and regular.

Aside from the list of things to keep in mind that Greg Loehr has posted here several times, any other things you would consider important to be aware of?

Thanks,

Santiago

well, i believe it was around 60 to 70 or so… it was pretty cold and took about 1-1 1/2 hours for the epoxy to thicken up to a pretty thick state and about 3-4 hours flip time. I let the board completely harden overnight before I sanded. I did all the glassing in one LONG day. Good luck! -Brett.

Thank Brett. Did you also hot coat it during that one long glassing day?

yes, I lamed and hotcoated in one day. Then the next day i came back with some sandpaper and finished it off. The board sanded like a normal polyester board with the additive F in the resin. I didn’t really have any problem with air bubbles. The fiberglass matt sort of shows up when using the resin unlike polyester, but in my local surfshop the epoxy surfboards look the same or worse with the weave being visible. Good luck
