Hey Guys,
Coming today my new follow along thread for a classic Noserider. I haven’t shaped in about 20 years (crap where does the time go). So have fun following along and she how it was done Old School!
In case of zombie apocalypse this will be good to know.
ha! Just kidding - looking forward to it.
When I got back into surfing after laying off for ten years I decide I was going to go full on Classic surf style! Back to my roots in the 1960’s.
I had my own shop in 1969 when the short board craze hit and made long and short boards under the name Orion Surfboards in Torrance. I had so much fun! So when I came back again I remember when I left off that Hybrid performance long boards were the thing. So I bought a New surfboard.
A Noserider that was supposed to be one of the top progressive boards of today. I spent $1079 on it. I headed for the beach to get started on surfing again. To my disappointment after 6 days the deck looked like an off road course. I took it back and ate a $100 restocking fee and headed right down the street and bought a blank.
Nuuhiwa Noserider and hit Doheny on an epic day! I had forgotten how easy that board caught waves and how well it rode the nose. So based on that I moved forward on my new Noserider.
First here’s what I wanted;
A board that paddles good
2. A board that is primarily for noseriding
3. A board I can knee paddle
4. A board that is light
5. A Board that won’t get knee dents easily
6. A board that is easy to ride and very forgiving
7. A board that performs well in beach break or point break
So here that I have come up with. A board that is 9’6”, 19 inch nose, 23 ½ inches wide and 16 inches at the tail. Single fin with a box. I pulled out my equipment and went at it.

I sellected a US Blanks 9’8’ Yater This gave me close to what I required. I will ad rocker to the tail and leave the nose rocker as is.

There’s just something so cool about a shaping room shot with all the mans tools about and bolts of cloth hanging on the wall.
Welcome back brother.
Glad to see you are using the proper tool.
Shaped by hand, not machine!
Whats cool is this shaping facility is less than I mile from my house. The uniqueness is that it’s out here in Murrieta. its a friend of mine. we will be having some good times. oh also its ina Barn on a horse ranch.
1st Nice planer and your shop looks productive.
“First here’s what I wanted”;
A board that paddles good
A board that is primarily for noseriding Your coarse is good
A board I can knee paddle Good luck old timer!
A board that is light Red foam is the lightest you can get in LB’s
A Board that won’t get knee dents easily I use Red with Vector 227 w/ 3 layers of D 4oz works ok but heel dents happen.
A board that is easy to ride and very forgiving Up too you.
A board that performs well in beach break or point break Humm wouldn’t we all!
Cool brother!
Maintain the stoke!
Volan Humm like you I got “back” into to this fun stuff, and went “oldschool”
“Classic foam and Volan”
Volan nowadays? 8oz is better than the 10oz. we knew, still sucks up resin though.
End result durable board but heavy.
Now I mean this as a complement, being in shape you could probably ride a coffee table!
Noseride AWAY!!!
Aloha
Hey Cap;
Glad to see you are back at it! Shape looks good, like how you rounded out the tail. Come down to tower 21 when you get it glassed. Lots of friendlies there. PM me if you need a variety of glass shops as I have dealt with most in our area and I can tell you “what’s what”. If you are going to do it yourself, Brad has all the stuff you need. I can give you other suppliers of glass, etc. in the HB/CM area if you want. Just don’t forget the nose bevel, Rich Harbour would never forgive you! LOL Best always,
BKB
Well pretty much got what I wanted. The concave is similar to my Bing but the rest is my own culmination of 50 years of surfing experience and hanging around the industry in the southbay during the 60’s.

Sso I got the board all shaped and made a HUGE decision to glass it myself. i just couldn’t get anyone to respond or even act like they wanted my business and glass my board.Having glassed lots of boards and done some pretty cool and now considered ols school processes. I’m going to do it all. From laminating to color and some very cool pin lines around a wrapped rail job. The first thing I’ll do is tape off the nose and do a colored resin abstract on the nose. I will be glassing this board with 7.5 ounce volan cloth ans use one layer on the bottom and one on the top with another layer of cloth for a 3/4 deck patch.It will be a single fin board with a fin box. si here we go…

WHOO HOO! I like your style, Capt Mike.
