Howzit stingray, I think the reasoning that a longboard needs to beat least 9' 0" is because most longboard contests require the board to be at least 9'0". For the keiki's though we tell them the board has to be at least 3' feet longer than their height, this is for the kids 12 and under divisions.Aloha,Kokua
I’d be riding a 7’er, then . Sounds like benny1 would be too eh ?
The shed is empty, nothing going on, very quiet and lonely in there now.
So there’s no bloody excuse Chip!!! Get in there and shape it!!!
Costs nothing to shape too…
how’s Friday / saturday combo sound ? [after my stitches are out thursday , I’ll be KEEN , after a surf , to hook into it . ]
-
The trick is to shape it , leave it in there two weeks , without getting it dinged, wet , dusty , or broken, though . Or…
-
withdraw money from my fledgling bank account , pay you , buy the neccessary glass , and resin, and box and plugs , and …DO it !!! …While it’s "mal-able’ waves !
…will it be [hopefully] a few weeks before you start on your nightmare oops next project , Grant ?
if I go with polyester , I can shape , resin swirl [?] , finbox, do the top and bottom …
if epoxy , get it lighter , maybe spray the blank …glass one side , and come back next time …
hmmmmm… I don’t want to intrude too often on you guys , though .
- If I did it next week , one evening [?] …maybe “Sabs” will be there , too ?
decisions , decisions !
ben
I’d give it a go when Sabs is there, that’ll be a real hoot…when did you want to have that barbie again?
friday it is …
I didn’t realise we had rain forecast [?! ]
Could be a good , slightly cooler day [hopefully ] to do some shaping , and , possibly , even glassing .
…have to wait and see …
cheers !
ben
the mal adjust ,
adjusted again …
[still to sand down the plugs and tail , but you get the idea …finally , i’ll be able to try out some of the QUIVER of side fins i have !!]
Do you realise that it’s been 11 months since you last posted on this board???
That looks great Chip, I’d be interested to hear how it rides now…
Just don’t snap it!!!
ye-esss hicksy !
…well…you ‘may’ be interested to know …
i finally got to ride it as a thruster …well, ‘2+1’ setup , actually …today !
I used my two hemp GS template side fins .
this was , unbelievably , only my fourth surf , in nearly ten weeks [??!!]
I got one nice chest high right , where i could definately feel the side fin holding in , and working together with the 7.5" back fin . It was a nice fast wave , hollow . I nearly didn’t make the takeoff , as with my recent ailments , my back , neck ,shoulders , arms , and especially my SPINE are all stiff , and my takeoffs could tend to be a wee bit on the slow side . Still, i was glad that , with nine foot of rail and two fins engaged at least , i was able to hold it in .
…it’s funny how even after a long break from surfing it all comes back to you , on the first wave !
Pascal was on his ‘Speedneedle’ twin fin ‘fish’ , as the surf was a bit hollower and …er… ‘bigger’[??] than expected . [yesterday it looked like the swell was dying into the evening , but ,perhaps, with the lower summer morning type tides , it jacked for a few hours ? ] when i left , by 8.40am , it looked to be dropping again , while the offshore , if anything , was picking UP !!! Unusual , as the seabreeze is often in by 9am …oh well, i guess it’s daylight saving eh , so that throws the schedule out a bit !
cheers
ben
…it will be fun[ny] to be having my 7’er and my 9’er as my ‘fin experiment platform’ boards from now on …
…now i’ve just got to maybe pay pascal to get shots of me riding it ? [his shark paranoia stops him standing in the water with a camera , unfortunately…funny considering all the years he spent surfing SOUTH AFRICA !!]
[yes , i have lost weight AND hair !!]
strange foil
this board is in such bad condition now , a guy thought it was an ‘original’ mal . bit of a worry eh !
Ben!
Nice to see you back in action! The Mal Adjustment looks good, I really like those side bites, FCS small ones right? I use them on my 8-7 mini longboard with a 7’5 inch boomerang fin (incidently made by yer mate’s countryman Maisch, sharks? Ach jirre moenie poes wees nie…) also on my 9-4 compsand with 8 inch’er, got a new cam so I’ll make some piccies this arvo…
Have a nice ride!

hiya dave !
thanks for the reply ! *
well, they are 4 3/4" deep , 5" base , mini keels , actually
eli and simon [my nephew and brother] now have them , plus the vector / wildy ‘back quad’ / cuttlefish template fins .
i now ride MUCH smaller side fins , especially as it is SO shallow here at the moment …
cheers mate !
ben
*YOUR fins will be in the post before the end of this month , i swear
“Cuttlefish” side fins.
They have a nice ring to the name don’t they?
Am I the only one with ads now pervading the banner and down the side of the discussion topics pages?
hehee
g’day cuttly !!
well , it is just a ‘name’ / label i coined , to describe the curious inside foil that the ever-inventive vicco now turned seppo ‘Wildy’ created on the fins he sent me last year …
cheers mate !

Nah, I meant the factory made ones :
But those mini keels look interesting. I wonder how they go. I mentioned those little ones because I have been surprised how good small sidebites work with a larger centerfin as opposed to having the “standard” ones with a smaller center fin.
I made a set of keels once for a buddy on his 8’6 mini mal. He likes em and goes swiftly about his minimalinations with em…
