My own fish (WIP)

hi Lob !

will you be tinting or spraying this one ?

making your own wood keels for it ?

cheers !

ben

Ben, I’ll have a clear resin job with a gloss.

I’ll try to make myself nice clean keels on that one.

I’m still thinking about cuting again to have trhee stringers…

Hard choice to make.

Having seen one of the wood/fiberglass home-made keels, I can tell you they’re gonna be great on that board.

POST THE PHOTOS!!!”, Chipfish screamed…

Triple Stringer it! With three stringers, a clear glass job, and handmade keels, this board will be unbelievable! Regardless of what you decide, keep us posted with pics!

Oh no!!! He’s gonna come back for two additional cuts/glue-ups!!! Please, someone tell him it won’t work, nobody ever does that, it’s forbidden by law, find something…

Some news.

My previous digital camera was dead so, I was unable to take any pictures…

Since then, I bought a new camera and I can (twist and) shoot again.

Here is what the blank is like once I’ve planned the stringer.

And here is what the balsa is like. Really good quality wood.

At last, the hole on the deck.

Looks like a dird took some foam off to make itself a home sweet home…

Anyway, the swallow will come around and the hole will just be a souvenir.

=> B@ls@ I can still give it a try if you really want…

lob: i’m really enjoying following this thread. merci mate.

Lob,

as always this looks like being a classic. I really liked the look of that Pavel with the wide stringer so I’m interested to see how this develops and rides. As I can’t surf due to lousy weather and filthy water, you did motivate me to finally send some fin specs to Chipfish! Now I just need 72hrs without rain and I’ll have my fish out there again…

I finaly managed to get some time working on the huge balsa stringer fish.

As you may remember, the blank was not that new.

The surface was brown/yellow, it had dots and holes everywhere.

So I first started to scratch the blank to remove the ugly shell.

The fact is, the foam is white inside.

So far, I’ve almost finished the volumes, deck and bottom contour.

I’ve decided to go on a single to double concave on a vee.

I still have a few things to fix about the deck close to the nose and about the stringer close to the tail on the bottom.

Here is what it was like:

Working on the balsa stringer is not that easy.

Fortunately, my planer is 82mm large and the stringer is 70mm so I can cut the stringer in one shot.

But once I work on the foam with the sand paper, I have to be really carefull not to create canyons close to the stringer.

The balsa is light and easy to sand son I adjust it sanding lightly.

The foam itself is fantastic to work with. I believe people who used to work with the 80’s supergreen clark blanks must have wonderfull souvenirs.

Next step will be to adjust the nose and tail, as already said and to work on the rails.

lob: looking great so far mate. beautiful work.

Lob,

that looks great and those are some serious bottom contours you’re planning- how thick is it?

I forgot to give the mesurements of the board: it’s a 5’6" x 20" x 2"1/2.

Very nice looking outline there mate. Looks like you have blended the foam and balsa very well.

That hole would have made a wicked cupholder

…if you dont mind, I suggest that you dont glass it heavy, due to the stringer and the small lenght of the board…

The fact is I was thinking about a 6ozEglas+4ozSglass for the deck and a 4ozSglass for the bottom.

Light and strong, clean cutlaps and a nice pinlines set.

mate , I’m LOVING this !

can’t wait to see more of its progress, the glassing , the fins , and …

…hear how it surfs , of course !

merci beaucoup , Alex

ben

Well, the end of the shape.

I really had to find some time to go on the rails and finish the shape…

She’ll be at the glasser’s really soon.

The glass job will be:6ozSglass+6ozEglass on the deck and 6ozSglass on the bottom, clear resin, black tinted pinlines, home made wood keels.
