Mysteries

how about some sort of super small and light propultion system.

And what about when we are able to ride sound waves? how long till that happens and what kind of board will that take?

I think moving parts on surfboards will become a big factor.

when I looked at this one this morning I saw that I was gonna expound but I knew I wasnt ready…but the word that passed accross my mental screen was magic…Merlin as represented by Mary Stewart’s books said that any phyisical science that wasnt yet understood was considered magic.I can derive a real solid sleeping state when the explainations get wordy…but when I feel myself going over the falls or connecting a glide line or getting weightless the feeling outstrips any possible aexplaination … touching a blank or sanding a ding or picking up an interesting shaped stick off the beach that looks like the greatest model hull thats what slams the door open wide.We stand on the threshold of space every time we paddle accross “that gossamer boundry” and are lifted to the sky effortlessly smelling the doorway to space only to glide back to full gravity but over and over we go, to the point we crave so much more hang and maybe glide time the plotting and scheming is almost as intoxicating. The mystery that remains is what would it be like to understand enough to be able to go out in any condition and circumstance and truly enjoy the elemental powers and control oneself within the eye or the vortex of the malstrom and derive that giide-lift from the rail fin displacement foil swing weight roller coaster aerial slide curl shot in an agravation free circumstance where everyone is out having a contact high release experience within and with all .You have been there,as have I. The mystery is just how well will our plans and plots succeed at getting us there…tomorrow?.. ambrose…so many alternative approaches…

Ambrose, All I can say is wow. You wrote some of the longest run on sentences I have ever seen. TB

shapesandhulls,

Yeah… you`re right. I reckon most of my posts/questions are loaded. Ha ha!

By “closed system”, I meant the basic elements which govern the surfing equation… the fact were humans, have specific heights, weights and finite skills. For example, the nature of water and waves, especially as they exist day-to-day for the average surfer. Or the materials for surfcraft ... how theyre fabricated, their buoyancy, toxicity, strength, resiliency, durabilty, cost and availabilty.

Ideally, we do have a infinite variation within the scope of all that makes up surfing. But push the performance envelope too far and you`re required to have the stamina and balance of a 20 year old gymnast, or maybe your board floats like the Titanic, or it works perfect but then falls apart, costs $3000.00, or flys like an out-of-control jet.

As for Alice in Wonderland, when she gets to the fork in that road and asks the Cheshire Cat which way she should

go… however expansive her choices may have seemed, they were still only a handful.

The only place thats ever been found to have unlimited potential is... our imaginations. Plenty of mysteries there... and thats my point.

Have fun!

DR.bronner is still the king of the run on sentence…is a sentence the term of imprisonment of a thought within a paragraph? Upon escape the thought was seen cascading accross the page in search of the hole in the roof of convention to drip in an’ start the mind to wanderin’…my appologies to the deceased Lennon and english literate stalwarts but the boundries of language exceed conventional punctuation… language lives and breathes…ambrose…I just went looking for the devils dictionary by Ambrose Bierce and I couldn’t find it I’ll bet he has somthing or two to say about punctilliouslessness…I went back to look up that one in Webster and found Bierce and he has nothing to say on punctuation …but on Reparation,n.satisfaction that is made for a wrong and deducted from the satisfaction felt in committing it …I believe that I have the abriged version of the Bierce dictionary… I bow deeply to your literacy …and the Queen

Ambrose, I was just kidding. I agree with you about Dr. Bronner. Go back to my last post I left you a .jpeg as peace offering. TB

J peg I know her . I live for points of departure I do thank you for the oppertunity to ruminate extrapolate and eludicidate…ambrose…at your service a son of a crossword puzzle-o-phile ( aint this fun )

Dirgelwch y bwrdd 'ma yw paham mae Ambrose yn mynnu siarad lol. - Anyone work that out?

a mystery to some and not to others …when the mystery is gone the search is over …

proven numbers ,tested formulas, scientific data ,a full understanding of every aspect of design by even a high school student…

no mystery ,no search

in my opinion its about conquering waves, like mountains or caves or the extremities of space …

every wave has board to suit it ,once youve surfed every wave on earth with the equipment refined and fine tuned to get the most out of that location …then you will have true understanding…about your own needs and wants in surfing…

the search continues …

everyone is a pioneer

regards

BERT

Some mysteries go unsolved, and it’s our human curiosity to keep searching for answers. Just like many other questioning minds. Questioning is fun, that’s no mystery.

Mystery…something that has not been or cannot be explained. Surfboards fall into both these categories.

Mystery…a deep secret. For some, surfboards fall into this category too.

Mystery…a religious truth man cannot fully understand. Surfing as a religion falls into this category also.

Why did Alice ask the cat in the first place? Did she take it’s advice, or use her own gut instinct? Wasn’t Alice the product of a drug induced mystery? Does it really matter? Go surfing, it feels good, no mystery there.

Ambrose - if the word that comes to you is magic, to me it’s harmony. Surfing is a peak experience, at its best it provides moments (very short ones) in which one can be (or feel) in perfect sync and harmony with the ocean (and really the universe). Self-awareness is lost in those moments; being at one is the cause of this, and its those peak experiences of oneness that cause surfing to be addictive… because that’s where we’d like to spend all our time, not just a few milliseconds of it… surfing is harmony; its music at a subsonic frequency we can’t hear, but we can feel.

Keith, well said, I like it.

it seems like whenever there is a new board concept is has to do with wanting to surf/experience the wave in a different way. what would like to do on a wave that you can’t do now?

Ahhhhh…that’s part of the mystery!

Mysteries – Oneness. This is a mystery to me, and to those of you who touched on this aspect of surfing as a religious experience, with an extreme nod to ambrose’s goal of attaining this state on a regular basis. To me this is regardless of the “craft,” but to get to Dale’s question: Who knows? As far as I can tell we haven’t come very far, but the distant future with/without nanotechnology, and “moving” boards would seem to be where it will be. Different aspects of hydrodynamics are most important at different times on a given wave and vary in importance from wave to wave across the ridden wave spectrum, so to have as a mysterious goal a single board that will excel in most, if not all, conditions someone is going to surf in seems good to me. It was pointed out that hydro dynamics are understood, and I agree they are, but how to best apply them without a van full of boards, and, if one agrees that, as stated above, “different aspects of hydrodynamics are most important at different times on a given wave,” then we have to look at a way to incorporate some “flexibility” into our surf craft design, so as to best utilize/maximize what we know about hydrodynamics – the pieces of which are usually best understood as aspects/design futures under certain conditions, and the interplays that take place as the condition change seem to give the fits, or, at least, lead to the compromises which are the modern surfboard.

What about bringing it all together – does it matter how, providing it is within courteous form, and what type of craft one rides – in relation to having the peak experiences we all want?

silverback …are we talking the mother tongue? Some of those consonant forms look lyke Welsh…? inform me yf ym roit…ambrose…far from me Welsh roots and unable to discern the concern

“Only Geometers Enter Here” Just as an exercise having nothing to do with esoteric or metaphisical or any subjective view see if you (meaning anyone) can come up with a formula for surfing. Example, Einstein narrowed down volumes of data to produce his famous formula. Good Luck!

Also I attached a photographic representation of waves as a reminder of why we pursue our activity. Notice the crowd.

Quote:
Aside from new applications of old ideas and their refinement, what mysteries remain in surfcraft design?

Being is greater than Knowing, and Mystery will always loom enormously large wherever one bothers to look. I’m afraid that our contemporary culture tends to undervalue its power, but the Imagination is the vehicle to understanding. Exercise your imagination, brothers! Science, for all of its blessed contributions, only sees what is, whereas human consciousness and the imaginative faculty sees what can be.

This isn’t really an answer to your question, Dale, as much as an affirmation of your questioning. Ask away! Share your doubt! Who’s to say?

Wow Ambrose, some Celtic blood definitely stirring in your veins. Very impressed
