NAME THAT FIN..........

waveset 3rd generation?

“TOECUTTER”

Not any kind of WAVESET. No way in hell. Similar to Guidance Systems, but not one of those, either. Guidance had a beveled dovetail. That one’s square.

It’s an Australian gizmo. I don’t have my reference materials handy at the moment, but memory tells me it was imported by the same outfit that handled John Arnold (Wayne Lynch) designs.

Late Sixties. Probably '69.

thanks, keep the ideas coming…

i know i saw a post about 3 months ago that pictured the exact same fin, but ive searched everywhere but cant seem to find it…

anyway, any info will be helpfull…

Simplex Fin Systems. Made in Australia.

This ad is from Spring, 1970. The address of the Florida importer is the same outfit who repped the John Arnold/Wayne Lynch boards. Note fin designs as being “Lynch 1, 2, and 3”.

I have that exact fin system on a 6’0" late sixties Hansen. Interesting info…

Chances are, it’s not the same. What you probably have is a Guidance Fins setup.

Both used a sort of dovetail fit. The Simplex had square cut edges, while Guidance used a

more typical beveled cut.

This is a photo of the Guidance system. Which does yours match?

“Not any kind of Waveset”. Dem’s fightin’ words!

Check the size of the “lugs” along the base of the Simplex fin. They are about the same size as the Guidance, around 1/2" long or so. Now look at the “lugs” on Onion’s fin. They are 1/4" long and about 1/8" high. Based on that, I would say that the base of Onion’s fin is about 5.5" long.

The only reason I know this is that I have a board with this fin system. Attached are pics of the fin, the box, and the Waveset logo in the box.

Why don’t you just sell me the fin? Are you going to make me beg? 'Cause I will if necessary!

OK, lets try the pics again

If you go visit my blog spot (link at the bottom of this post) you will scroll down and see a 5’8" Bing Glass Slipper that I found a long time ago, stripped reshaped and reglassed. For the longest time, I had been trying to figure out what kind of fin box it had in it because back then I couldn’t find another fin to fit the box. I ended up glassing over the box and glassing on the fin that is currently on it. Now that I’ve seen this thread, I know it was a Guidance Fin Box that I had, only it was Green. It was the same box that was in my first surfboard (a Harbour transitional, which I wish I still had) I wish I still had it the 5’8" Bing Glass Slipper too! I didn’t have any cash and wanted a Phil Edwards Model that I saw in an antique shop widow, so I ran home, grabbed the Glass Slipper, an old late 60’s popout w/skeg, and a 10’ Hanky triple stringer single fin pintail longboard, went back to the store, and the guy gave me the Phil for those 3 boards.

If anyone ever see’s that Glass Slipper, I would gladly buy it back from the new owner!

Im out of town for a few weeks… I’ll check out the fins system when i get home and post some pics.

id say its a waveset design, pretty much matches your fin there nick, different template though… square tabs on the base, 11 of them…

i thinking of doing the ebay thing, this is one of those things where if you need it im the only person in the world willing to sell it,(that ive found)… which tells me its worth a pretty penny to those who need it…

its the origional thing and in really good condition… when i decide to spend more than 10 min. on the computer ill set it up…

then if no one wants it then you can have it nick, make a better offer and then it could be yours to start with…if you can find someone else who has one then let me know.

“anyway, any info will be helpfull”

Because you needed to know what you have in order to get as much as possible for it on Evil bay? Classic.

I finally found the old ad I was searching for. The pic below is from SURFER July 1970 (used w/o permission)

This seems to be the last ad that Waveset ran in the mags. By that time the modern Fins Unlimited box with solid fiberglass fins was on the market. Waveset must have thrown in the towel shortly thereafter.

Onion- I sent you a P.M.

haha. uh yeah, people still do buy and sell things… i expect that trend to continue untill the human race is extinct…what do you live off of? in my world money is what keeps the lights on.

so, to explain it for you- common sense tells me that if i asked “how much is this fin worth” then id get people tell me its pretty much worthless. only to email me the next day with a different name offering to buy it for $10… get it?

so “any info will be helpful” is so I can try to figure out what its actually worth, before i give it away…makes perfect sense too me, how about you?

you see the seller wants to sell as high as possible, and the buyer wants to pay as little as possible… normally they meet at a price so they are both happy…theres you’re quick lesson in economics.

pretty simple and very classic, meaning its the way things have been done since humans figured out how to make fire(likely before that), before paper $ they did’nt just give everything away without getting something in return …
