@mako - I guess you’re saying that anything that has to do with environmental concerns is off limits? I’m sure you’ve noticed, but it’s our government who, by and large, controls what happens to our beaches so any environmental issues that concern beaches and the waters we surf in will have to include some political element. In our particular situation what most people accept as normal political positions (Democrats that are pro environment and Republicans that are pro business) was turned upside down. We had a Democrat Governor who was (initially at least) on the wrong side of an environmental issue and it was a predominantly Republican community that was outraged. When I witnessed the Governor’s announcement last Wednesday, she was the only Democrat politician in the room, everyone else (our city and county elected officials) were all Republican. For a brief moment we all agreed on an issue and stopped something that would have been very bad for everyone, a lesson our federal government could learn a lesson or two from.
This is a political issue, IS IT NOT??? Is it related to surfboard building???
Somebody seems a bit cranky.
I have some good memories of Surfing the Outer banks back in the late 60's.
Hope the ground swell of public opinion kills the Sulfur plant. So how does Sulfur react to poly or Epoxy resin? See back to Surfboard building.
Sulfur + H2O + O2 -> Hydrogen Sulfide (toxic/stinky) + Sulfuric Acid (acid rain) -> dead fish + dead critters that fish eat + smelly air
I guess since resin, wax, foam and fiberglass are impervious to most things noxious to living things, whether the water and all the critters in it are dead is irrelevant. My appologies for assuming that all board builders actually care about the environment they are surfing in.
regardless its an enviroment issue others need to know. ( you are the only one turning it in to an issue"")
this is a general disscusion is it not?
this does involve surfers does it not?
be a good boy and sign the petition stop stirring the pot.
keep up the good work kahuna’’
cheers huie
PCS abandoned the project.
Public concern over plans to build a sulfur-melting plant on state
port land near Morehead City’s waterfront helped to kill the project.
PCS issued a statement after the governor’s announcement:
“PotashCorp makes it a priority to be a good corporate neighbor,” the
company said. “Part of being a good neighbor is listening. We believe
this is a good project that would bring jobs and benefits to the region,
but have heard the concerns of local residents.”
I first surfed the Out Banks in the spring of 1968. you could drive down the main road pick a place to check the surf find a peak that was working and surf without anybody in sight. The fishing is pretty good around the outer banks, Challenging sailing and it still has that laid back country charm., with a lot less of the racist KKK atmosphere that I recall from 1968.
PCS’s change of plans is nothing but good news whether you view it as political or not. The OBX is a truly beautiful place and if you have’nt seen it you should. Especially when it’s going off! Speaking of that. It has been soooo flat latley. Fingers crossed that this thing forming in the caribbean makes some swell for the EC. I’ve got a new board just waiting to get out.
I moved here from Hawaii, but have also surfed California, Mexico, and elsewhere in the Pacific. The Outer Banks of North Carolina is truly a gem. Some of the nicest beaches and cleanest water you’ll find anywhere in the US. I avoid getting involved in politics and hardly watch the news. But this thing was something that I just couldn’t turn my back on. I’m happy to say that there were thousands of other people who felt the same way. :)
“…you could drive down the main road pick a place to check the surf find a peak that was working and surf without anybody in sight.”
It’s not too much different than that even today. The “main breaks” get pretty busy, especially down in Wilmington and some of the other metro areas, but if you’re willing to drive you can still find empty peaks, especially during the off season.
I grew up here in the East then moved to Norcal and married a girl who still has family in the islands and spent lots of time there. Having place to stay in HI is never a bad thing. We came back to NC about 7 yrs. ago best decision ever. With a little effort you can find empty breaks all trough NC even around Wilmington. Just a few miles from Surf City pier and you can be the only one out.
Big Kahuna you moved here from HI. Did I read about you this spring in local mag?
@ncsrf22 - Me? In a magazine? LOL! I seriously doubt it. My surfing skills are such that I make everyone else in the lineup look good! ;)
He He… OK thought you were someone else. Sorry.
There are a surprising number of people from Hawaii here or in the area. I know of 4 native Hawaiians locally (my wife being one of them) and about twice that number who lived for an extended period of time on the islands. We love it here, I tell my friends back in Hawaii that the Outer Banks is a lot like Hawaii in the “old days”. Mostly just miss Hawaiian kaukau. ;)
