I’m looking for a quality glasser that is located within a 15 mile radius of Huntington Beach CA. The glass shop I used to take my shaped blanks to raised there prices way up, and they still took 5 or 6 weeks to complete the boards! Is there anyone out there that can do airbrushing/painting and glass longboards to a mirrored gloss finish? Anyone out there that can do this for a small time shaper that makes only a few longboards a year, and charge me a decent price for their craftmanship? Hope to hear from someone who can do this, or knows of a lead for me…
What do you deem as a fair price for a top quality glass job? Materials have sky rocketed, and labor really hasn’t gone up that much. Do you feel the glasser is gouging you or are you looking for a cheaper alternative…like maybe doing it yourself? Thats the only way to save money, but it’s still going to cost you $120.00 in material if you buy it in bulk. If you have to buy a gallon here, and a quart there, maybe a little catalyst too…and don’t forget the expensive tape. you going to spend more like $150 in material.
Now let talk about what the time is worth. If you haul butt you can have it done in 2 full day. let’s see, getting paid $10.00 per hr (cheap) 2 days at 10 hrs ea. or $200. Plus the $150 in material you just lowballed your glass job at $350.00. If anybody will glass you out for less than that, I’d take it. How far off was glasser from HB?
I know you know all this stuff, just a reminder to support your local glasser.
i’m a glasser here in france (bordeaux) and i’ve learned this job in SD at the Roper’s shop. We do have the same misunderstanding with some customers when it comes for the price of a glass job. We have to take on labor cost 'cause they seems to ignore that materials have hit the roof.
And talking about gloss finish where you better not count the amount of time before getting a mirror polish.
Let say no more than 5 usd per hour…
but hey, when you’re hooked! i still like it better than the fishing factory.
Howzit resinhead, 20 hours of labor on a board seems like way to much time. I say about 5-6 hours is a more reasonable amount of actual time spent on a board. Some people take into consideration the time waiting for a glass job to kick and cure as time spent working, but I figure the actual hands on work is the true time spent on the board. So figure $20 an hour plus materials is a good way to figure cost. yeah, i was going down the road that if you did it yourself, and were paying yourself. It would take all weekend to glass, sand, fin, gloss and polish out a board.
I’ve done a board nutz to bolts in one day, but i would recommend it to anybody with any other obligations for a full day…and that includes eating lunch. It still takes me 2 days to do a board at a fairly good clip. Cutlaps, ,pigments, cups, tape, resin pins, gloss, polish, sand ,fins, etc, Blab, blab.
Maybe it is only 5 hrs of actual work, but it certainly take me longer.
