I have designed a board using a standard engineering CAD program; and
can export to any of the following CAD files: .stp, .igs, .wrl, or .3dxml. So far all the CNC shaping services I have
found in the San Diego area use the Shape3D CNC program to run their machine/cutter
combinations. A very good package, but (for
what I have found) it cannot readily accept any of the CAD formats mentioned
above. I contacted the guys in France
and they were kind to do an automatic import into Shape3D at no cost; but the
surfacing NURBS where distorted out of position loosing important detail and
making the board narrower in the center. Would anybody know of someone in the area with
a CNC program/machine system that could directly accept .stp files (or any of
the formats above) to cut my board? Any
help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
We are power users of Shape 3D and Rhino 3D.
You can export your file in .IGS however there is clean up work involed to make the file cut a clean pre-shape.
If you expect someone to work for a couple of hours translating and cleaning up your file for free it may delay your progress.
Contact me if you would like more detail.
Our business works in this area of file management.
Kind regards,
surfding
Ps Can you generate G-Code from your program?
If so you would be able to cut it on most machines.
KKL can cut from an iges file. I used to design board’s with ProEngineer and had them do a few cuts for me some years back. Give Tyler a call. They’ll ship to SD too.
kirk
Tyler can do it for you.
We are in Huntington Beach (Design Office) Costa Mesa (Factory) so KKL (Oceanside) will be closer.
Listen to Kirk.
I’m going surfing in Tahiti for a while starting Christmas until past the new year.
Surfding and Kirk,
Thank you for your prompt response. I will contact Tyler at KKL tomorrow since Oceanside is a little bit closer. It is good to learn that ASI and KKL can address file management issues; I am glad i learned about this forum.
Cannot wait to get my board cut and to test it soon, maybe in time for a good winter swell
Surfding,
I am interested in generating my own G-code on my next board iterations. As I understand I would need the parameters of the cutters. Would you have information in regards to the cutters commonly used, or know where I could look for it?
That is a killer picture, beautiful wave! happy surfing in Tahiti
Best Regards,
Alkibiades
KKL uses a smaller cutterhead than I do.
Your right you need the parameters of the cutter head to generate the G-Code.
You can ask Tyler for the dimentions of their cutterheads?
