Need help => Fin schedule choice

I’ve done this:

I got the idea from two posts on the surfermag.com BB, one from Shwuz, and the other about recycling a log found in a trash.

The mesurements are 6’0" x 21"1/2.

The outline is the same as the 5’10" fish I made.

I just changed the tail into a diamond.

I’ve not yet decided what the bottom will be, concaves, V, what else ???

The rocker is really flat (1" at the tail and 2" at the nose) as the “blank” comes from the center of the log.

I’ve just trued the outline so, I still have to work on rails (boxy).

My question is: what fins could fit ?

I take any suggestions.

Thanks.

Hey Lob, you read my mind, i was thinking on doing something like that, a fish template with a diamond tail, vee bottom with mild concaves on it and a paddle fin…

I also though about installing a center fin box and side Lokbox boxes to try it both as a single fin or as a twin fin with keel fins, jus to try the difference when riding a fish, but without this “hole” in the tail (maybe it’ll loose some hold, but it will plan better on mushy waves).

I think Manuel from Mandala, Steve Brom (what a Master!) and others are shaping boards on this same line.

Let us know how it rides. I’m really interested on it’s performance on beachbreaks.

a three fin bonzer would be nice, with that outline …

by the way, Lob, I sent you a coupla ‘messages’…just click onto the ‘messages’ box at the top of the page.

cheers mate !

p.s. - I’m off to hicksy’s now to work on my 3 fin ‘canyons’ “Bonzer” / ‘pineapple’ / ‘scary monster’ board [see ‘bonzer project’ thread of ‘skeletor’s’ …]

Maybe a 2+1 but keep your options open and use a fin system that will allow you to try some different options. One of the fin systems that has a good Twin fin option would be worth considering.

Totally agree with Thefishexp…you need a 2 + 1 set up so you can change the configuration and come up to the best for you. Personally I would ride that as a twin because I had one like it and it moved awesome. But I always wondered what would it feel with smaller side fins and a trailer.

Ok, then 2+1 sounds good.

Problem is, only FCS or Future are to be found in France… I don’t really like FCS besides they have no interesting side fins (twinwise) and never did Future (they don’t have fins either but creating some would be easier).

About bottom contour should I go on deep concaves, Bonzer 3 like ?

Lob, Futures is, in my opinion a better system than FCS, but they have a limit on the lenth of fin base as you know. So if you want to use traditional keel fins on this board i would go with FCS, and using three plugs instead of two you can make a pair of keels with three legs on their long base.

Other option would be ordering Lokbox fins and boxes… i’m doing this, so i’ll let you know how they are when i have the fins and boxes. Maybe when can orther some fins together and afford on shipping from USA, and then shipping between Galicia and France is a lot cheaper.

My suggestion if you want to finish the board NOW would be: a center fin box (bahne style) and three plugs on each rail, so you can build your keels to try.

Good luck! the board looks awesome!!!

…or, as I did on the bonzer today, THREE bahne / fins unlimited boxes.

Then, options : - single, twin , 2 + 1, thruster, bonzer …

ben

[the diamond tail twin I had went sh**house, though ! ]

I wouldnt put concave near the middle since the board already has very little rocker and that would flaten the rocker even more…but you can add double concave behind the fins ending at the fins just like a bonzer would. I think that would end up a sweet board.

I apologize but I’m going to reply my own topic.

The reason why I do so is quite simple and I’ll try to find the good words to explain why (being french it’s somehow challenging to me).

The board in the topic comes from a log I owned. The board was not a good board and that’s why I decided to cut it into a smaller board.

As I shaped the board, I spoke to myself (what a wonderfull world) and thouhgt I did not really need a 14th board…

So I figured I could propose a deal on the french surfing website I dayly visit (www.surf4all.net).

Here is the deal: If someone wants to pay for the fiberglass, resin and so on, I finish the board, then surf it and then give it to the one who payed. I thought it was fair enough. So, I could ride the board and provide a cheap toy to a friend…

Then my friend Bertrand (aka Thetotor) cam with that idea…

He just saw “Single Fin Yellow” and he says, that board has not to be given to one and only person. It has to become any member from the website’s board, just for a while and change hands from times to times…

I loved the idea.

So, the board is going to be surfed by any kind of surfer and in any place in France.

I’ll keep in touch with the board and get the feedback about it.

I’ll also keep memories about that adventure on a dedicated website…

Just wanted to share the stoke.

Lob,

2+ will work well.

Setup your sides so it’ll go as a twin.

I think you’ll like that diamond tail, How wide is the tail( point to point)?

I don’t think you can put to many fin boxes in especially if you’re keen to experiment. Can you get the long bane bosex where you are? 15"?

Have fun.

  • Tail is 13" wide. 2" forward the end.

  • I can only get 10"

I will. We will in fact.

Merci.

Lob, FCS have a twin fin template that I am a little impartial to… it’s the MR-X (designed by Mark Richards himself) I’m a pretty big fan of the MR twin fin template. They are available in Australia and the US, so ask your local supplier if you can’t get them in France. Worth considering  -Cameron
