need help finding a board

i live in san diego and have always used a friend’s board. i have finaly decided to buy my own and because i dont surf much i dont know what to get, other than a long board at least 8ft. im a 5’10" 240 newbie that needs HELP!!!

David, Try Encinitas Surfboards. They always have a pretty good selection of new and used boards. I’ve also seen a good variety up at the Stewart shop in San Clemente. Both places have knowledgable surfers in the store who can steer you in the right direction. For a guy of your size, I’d look at something with softer rails and some thickness. I’m partial to pintails for ease of turning, but do a little research and talk as many people as possible to get their opinions. A lot of the Big Boys at Cardiff like the 10’2"Aipa Stinger, the 10’0" Walden Magic, or the Bruce Jones 10’. Good luck with your search. I hope to see you in the water. Doug

Also, try to note what works for you about your friend’s board, and what doesn’t. For instance, if it feels unstable beneath you when you paddle, or if it’s too stiff when you turn the board, or even if it’s too wide to carry under your arm. Every aspect of the board that you can note will help a shaper/salesperson/experienced friend determine your next purchase. Good luck!

Dave, I’m your size, weitht wise. I surf big boards 11’ and a few 10’6". I have a board that I’m looking to sell. Let me know if you are interested. I have found that going longer, gives the board a better feel then going shorter and real thick. Just my 2 cents worth.
