NEED HELP....possible board dimensions

hey all… I am going to be starting a shaping class here at Cal Poly SLO. I dont want to make a “new” style shortboard, instead I am going for more of an oldschool egg shape. Because of this, I have to make my own template and measurements because the guy doin the class doesnt have any other templates. I am 5’10", 165 lbs…Here is what I was thinking for my “disk” shape: Length: 6’6", Width @ center: 21.5", Width @ front of fin box: 16.5", Width (1ft. from tip of nose): 16.5", Thickness: unknown, Start of fin box 5" from tail… (single fin) ANY help would be great… I am still unsure about thickness and rocker measurements. I want this board to be an all around fun shape, mostly for down the line speed and big arching turns… classic/clean lines. I want it to paddle pretty well and float me. Thanks for the help…

Hey Kevin, Those dimensions sound fine, though the tail is a bit wide. McCoy Nuggets follow similar dimensions, but have some chine in the rail to make it transition through turns easier. 14 1/2 to 15 1/2 in the tail will work fine for most disc shapes, and the narrower tail will add some more curve to the outline. The rocker should be lowered for down the line speed and carving turns, 4" in the nose and 2" in the tail–not too much tail kick as it’s a single fin. 2 3/4 to 3" thick depending on the deck contour and how sensitive you want the board to be. Good luck and post some pictures when it’s done!

thanks much for the measurements… quick question though: if i taper down the back of the board, is that going to help me stay trimed in the wave? what is the purpose??? sorry if these questions sound novice, but i am… ha… kevin
