So I’m new here, but not to forums in general. I’m probably going to get skewered for asking this but I can’t find anything on here by searching. I’m glassing my first board, and i feel like it’s insanely heavy. It was fine after the laminate coats, but i just hotcoated the top and it feels like it weights a ton. I used approx .6 liters with 1.5% cat and 10% SA. The board is 5’8x 19x 21/4. Does that seem like too much resin for a hotcoat? and if so, should i just go heavy on the sanding?
I am confident that the weight is not from saturation during the laminate coat, as i only used 1/2 or 3/4 of the amounts recommended to me, and like i said it wasn’t heavy at all then. I am about to hotcoat the top, but i want to make sure that it’m not going to ruin my hard work by making it weigh 10 lbs. Also, the hotcoat looks very smooth, there aren’t many problem areas that I can see. Can i just start with a 200 grit or so? Or should i start lower, i have one source telling me start with 220 and another saying to use 60. Thanks guys, ill post pics in the proper place once I do the finplugs!
I am not doing a gloss coat, so maybe that’s why the amount was so high? I was given the amounts by my shaper, but it was intended for beginner builders so i wonder if he recommended more than necessary. I will dial it back a little when i do the top tomorrow, i’ll do the amount listed for a 5’5 or so. Do you have a link for that pictorial? Id like to take a look.
As far as sanding goes, I was just going to use a palm sander. how high of a grit do you have to get to so the finish doesn’t look matte? Or does that wax prevent it from getting that foggy look. thanks
I mean, the gloss coat is another coat, one more coat, you know; so you do the hot coat somewhat thinner, the sand then do the gloss coat the polish and rub out.
For a deck and deck laps hot coat a 220ml will be right, 600ml is too much.
The sanding process varies depend on the finish; for a gloss finish, sand the hot coat with coarser sand paper to get a better bond for the gloss coat
check everything will be smooth, because the gloss coat do not correct any bumps, etc.
then, apply the gloss coat per side, then polish starting with 400 grit if its perfect, if not start with 320 and up to 1000; then rub out to shine.
@reverb, thanks. I am not doing a gloss coat though, just sanding the hotcoat. So that’s why i was wondering how to get the best looking finish from the hotcoat. looking at pics, i think 600 ml is way too much. ill probably dial it down a little for the top of the board.
as for the other grasshopper claims… i think it will be okay. if he/she pm’s me ill change it.
Ok makes sense. So should I do about half as much when I hotcoat the top? It seems weird that when giving me resin amounts, my shaper would have suggested this much over the normal amount. It made sense to overestimate on the laminate because it doesn’t all end up on the board, but I’m wondering if he suggests this amount to cover up imperfections for unskilled glassers… unfortunately I can’t ask him because he’s in costa for a week or two, and I can’t wait that long to talk to him. I was thinking maybe 300ml just to be safe? what do you guys think
You feel the need to log on as Grasshopper02 when someone already logs on as Grasshopper....and when I question it you feel the need to log on as Stingray02 and hack my avatar photo......weak...very weak.
Hello long time Swaylock's posters....what do you think? .....Ok, call me a jerk or whatever....don't steal Grasshopper's name and hack me and make it look like it's my fault......
Hey, 600 ml for an 5`8 you could laminate with and still have left overs. Like every one mentions here you should only need 100ml-160 depending on the level of coating. Consider all the sanding you have to do, sanding off the excess 400ml of resin is a lot of work. It would be easier to hot coat to fill weave then sand and gloss coat and sand again and you would have lighter, cleaner finish and lot less sanding.
I would start with 80 grit till you reach a even flat level and then go to 120 grit, 180 and then 220, 320.
What do you mean hack you? Bro I think your confused… all I did was come in and ask for some help with something that didn’t look right. I did not go through the effort of making another name and steal your picture or whatever, I thought you did it to prove a point that i didn’t understand. I mean honestly… it shouldnt be the end of the world. if this other person has been here a while, you shouldnt have a hard time telling us apart by our posts. and as i said, if they pm me, ill change it.
Like I said ask n I’ll change it. I didn’t think it mattered, on the Subaru forum I’m on there’s tons of names that are almost exactly the same, like 10 versions of Rex and effects, and a few t-rex’s.
Firstly this is a public Internet forum, anyone can sign up and post. No hacking is required to set up an account of a similar name, nor to apply your avatar as the avatar of such an account. To accuse grasshopper02 of “hacking” shows your lack of understanding of these facts.
Secondly, it’s not a sad day. The only sad thing is that you don’t have a sense of humor when clearly a few people found the parody funny. Whatever happened to ThickSkinRay from the infamous Ghettorat encounter?
Thirdly, if people aren’t allowed to have similar names on this forum, then forum software and the terms of use shouldn’t allow it. Neither is the case. And what’s more, grasshopper is a fairly well known term for student or apprentice, stemming from the “Kung-Fu” TV series in the 70s. It’s entirely appropriate the grasshopper02 use the name, as he is here to learn more about board building.
And finally, grasshopper02 comes here asking for assistance regarding his hot-coat technique, and you spout of this completely off-topic nonsense about him stealing grasshopper’s name. Do I need to remind you of the fuss you kicked up about Ghettorat getting off-topic when he critiqued your laps on your thread about installing a fin-box?
