Need immediate help! Stripes on a 9'0"

Hey guys! OK here’s the deal…My “longboard from hell”

The client wants 3 stripes on the deck.

Here’s the layout:9’0" HPLB EPS, epoxy, Bamboo cloth

Stripes: Stringer, 1/4" pink stripe(each side of course), gap, 2" green stripe, gap, 1/2" blue stripe

Is my only option here to paint the foam?

The bamboo will mute the colors so I’m really kind of looking for an alternative.

I have about 30min to make the decision…so any help will be much appreciated.

Are you glossing over the sanded hotcoat Todd?

I’d say yes, you can put stripes on the sanded hotcoat using a quality acrylic latex, then gloss (or re-hotcoat) over it. Comes out sharp.

It’s done that way all the time.

Well, foam stain stripes can be a pain, especially on an EPS blank. Gotta tape off and do the stripes, then tape off the stripes and seal the rest of the blank. A pain. Other than that, I personally would do old school resin stripes on the hotcoat and under a gloss. Got Cobalt?

I would also recommend that you paint them on the hotcoat, but putting epoxy over the paint may give you some problems. I would sand the hotcoat to 80 grit, airbrush the stripes with a quality acrylic like Novacolor, and then use a poly glosscoat. Poly will flake off epoxy in a short time unless it’s sanded rough. If you want more durability than just a gloss over the paint, cover the group of stripes with clear 4 oz using poly after painting, hotcoat and fair in the cloth. Then poly gloss.

Thanks for the replies,

It became apparent rather quickly that doing the stripes on top was the way to go.

The resin stripes were out as well(thanks anyway leslie). The colors that were selected are WAY too vibrant to be able to do them old school.

We’re talkin like NEON vibrant.

So…we’re going to do a thin "cheater coat over the lam, sand, paint, hot coat, then gloss.

Any other comments or suggestions are welcome on this thread.

We could make it a “Stripes” thread.
