Hey folks…hoping to get a little advice here. Second time glassing but first time doing a cut lap and resin tint. Using poly UV resin on a poly blank. On the whole it went okay I guess, but there are some spots that I’m concerned with what to do. Basically I didn’t get the lap smoothed down good enough or there were air bubbles in the cloth, so it’s lifting up in a few places. My plan is to do a cloth inlay on the nose and tail and a dos stain on the rest. I know I can do a fat pin line to hide any irregularities, but what should I do to get those trouble areas taken care of? Any advice is appreciated!
I can’t see your picture that well, but you can usually re-wet the cloth with resin in the trouble areas. It looks as though you did’t cut proper relief cuts at the nose. You gotta alot of balls trying to do a blue tint on your 2nd board ever and using UV Resin. The UV should have gave you plenty of time to make sure you had everything tucked before exposing the board to UV light source. I don’t know if any one ever told you but UV doesn’t work well(if at all) with tinted or opaque resin.
If you don’t care about the cosmetic aspect of your board, just sand down those dry fiberglass spot until they are removed (don’t sand into the foam) do like you would do for a repair with cloth patches and blue tint. Once cured, sand the ridges around the patches so there is no bump and then glass the deck.
If you care about cosmetics and don’t mind some extra steps, I would do the same, but before glassing the deck, I would tape the rails and do a cheater coat with black pigment real opaque and thinned lam resin, apply, remove the tape, slightly sand your black rails and then glass the deck. Make sure your laps are going over the bottom of your now black rails. You will end up with a nice looking board with black rails…
