Needlepoint inlay

Among the piles and piles of detritus in my basement, I happened across a very cool piece of antique needlepoint. It is a floral design with a bird of paradise motif. The piece is about three inches wide by ten inches long and I had a notion that it might look really cool glassed into the deck of a longboard that a friend and I just finished shaping.

I’ve searched the archives and, while there’s lots of good info on fabric inlays, there’s not so much about unique antique needlepoint. Any suggestions? I’m just wondering if I should take out some foam on the deck to compensate for the thickness of the fabric. Like, measure the piece on the deck where I’m going to put it and then run a block over it a dozen times or so to remove the 1/16” or so of foam to leave the thing flush against the deck so there’s no strange lump under the glass. Also, will I be able to push the resin through the needle point? The piece is very finely stitched using what looks to have been a very thin thread, but it is still pretty thick. Thanks in advance for the help.

Find something similar and experiment.

I would think that lightly routing out to thickness would be best and possibly taping off around piece, prior to laminating, pushing in sanding resin to make sure of total saturation. Then sand before laminating board.

Be careful, there may be color bleeding.

Good luck.
