If you're old-school, don't watch...

My favorite "Kid"

If you're old school, he's cool.

Thanks for adding that, kids are kids everywhere. Plus I stuck around for the credits on the first vid and noticed that an old friend of mine's son is part of that crew.

I remember the when we did that without leashes, errrr, I mean traction pads.

What an athlete!!

I’m old school and enjoyed that.  Liked the old school tail stall pull into the tube, too.  Kid having fun indeed. Mike

The kids are alright.

Nice videos Mike and Uncle Grumpy…

This is one of the most jaw-dropping video clip I think I’ve ever seen. The kid is a cat!

Cool!  that whole innersection video clip competition is pretty unreal, those guys are part bird or flying fish or something LOL.  How do you even pick a winner, they're all so good!  And remember when we were blown away by Bertleman hahaha?

Speaking of underestimating kids - I can remember years ago , fresh off the plane and paddling out into some sizeable waves on Maui, and seeing little kids in the lineup on boogie boards.  I'm thinking, where are the parents, these kids are gonna get hurt out here.  Next thing I know the kids are dropping into these big faces - and standup surfing on boogie boards, and just ripping.  I'm like Oh, shoot, I think I might be out of my element here.

Could be my age but all this aerial stuff looks kinda ugly, odd stance, arms flailing, awkward landing in a ball of spray, functional or just tricks?

Is this the future of surfing ?

Probably just them doggone kids having fun and not giving a hoot what us old farts think.

I don't see a lot of that stuff at the spots I surf, and I don't really like the aerial pics in the mags because half the time I can't even see the wave - but when I sat and watched a freesurf during a recent competion, I had to admit, in person, it was pretty much fun to watch them jumping off the waves like teenage mutant ninja fleas.

BTW, I'm ok with this as the future of surfing.  It could be a lot worse...

When looking at those clips I can't help but think this is new school surfing with old school stoke.

Ryan Burch has been making a name for himself with his alternative surf craft.  I understand that he shapes and glasses his own boards.

Yeah, Ryan has become a pretty amazing shaper and with Ekström's tutelage he's way into the asyms.

Here's a link to Ryan's blog.

After 30+ years of watching guys do airs, it's become so much a part of what I see in the water that it's hard to imagine contemporary surfing without them. That's what's amazing about the Brad Domke clip, he's got it all going on - the finless sliding, big air, kickstall into barrel, etc. And he certainly proves you don't need much volume to paddle into waves (when he's not getting whipped in by Kech, who was one of the guys pioneering the air approach late 70s-early 80s).

Hey Mike, maybe you can confirm or not something for me?

I don’t know where I heard it but, I always thought the term “catch air” came from Matt Kechele…

Not that he called them that but, people would say “Kech air” and eventually that turned into “catch air” ???

think ''Kech air'' was a mag photo caption, a play on words and spelling. Since most people would pronounce that close to ''catch'', it worked. He was a 16 year old kid when those photos started running in the late 70s.

Thanks for the link Grumpy

Mike, That clip of Brad Domke is impressive. Florida is a good place for little minnows to do some growing.

The Quality of the footage is outstanding.

The kids today are taking it to the next level!

Thanks for the post Mike.

Kind regards,

surfding

You're welcome, surfding. You live in another one of the places where the kids don't understand limits on what is possible. When we were their age we didn't either, lol. Some of us didn't ''grow up''.

Might as well put the new vid on this thread also...

That was amazing!
