New $42 Glassing rack and a view from the shed

Moved to my new home and have the shed 'sorta" set up. It’s actually a ver small one-car garage. that is if your one car was a vconvertable Mini. However, much to the dismay of my wife, it is the ideal size for shaping and glassing…

Also, I finally got around to creating some new glassing racks. 5 gallon buckets, 1.5" PVC pipe, coupler, metal collar and some scrap wood to finish it off. Works extremely well for the modest sum of about $40.

Good deal. Always nice close to have a convienent place to go hide, have a beer and ponder the next project. One observation, might want to move the weed whacker somewhere else.

Looks great. It sucks having a small garage, but I live in an apartment so I don’t have a garage. Have fun working in it.

All you need now is some racks on the wall for all your blanks and shaped boards.

Looks really nice. Makes me want to build my own.

Hey drew, sweet setup, looks cosy!

How big is that garage? 4m x 5m?

I’ve got a backyard shed i want to turn into a shaping / glassing bay… do you think 3m by 3m is enough?

Only for actual work on boards, no storage in shed of all the crap

Cheers

I just finished some similar tonight, cost me 38$

LOL…I see that supra in the background, now im extremely jealous of you. o ya, nice racks too. (is that the same hood mod from fast and the furious?..private message me so i dont get yelled at for non surf related talk)

Hey Lavz, nice SI avatar.

Do you have one of those sheds you go out into to fix the toaster for the wife?

And is it, just by chance, connected to all your mates sheds, where all the walls fold away together to make one big shed?

I’ve seen the ad, and I like to think there’s a collective backyard surf factory in every suburb and town.

3X3 is big enough, especially with sensibly placed shelves and racks. I once partitioned off a small room, on one wall I put shelves and board racks etc, then hung a wall to wall roll up plastic curtain to protect everything from dust, paint, etc. I even had shaping/sanding lights which I could lower next to the curtain.

I still think there could be a trailerable version, for the custom boardmaker on the road.

Hey Wilds,

I love that ad, and im sure some group has copied it somewhere…

I like the trailer version, think of the mobility… But why run around when your customers can come to you? I was thinking along the lines of drive - through board maker shops…

I’ll have a 6’2’’ swallow tail combo with no lams or fcs… would you like to upgrade to glass ons with that?!

sweet - stoked the 3x3 is big enough… going to do some renovations on it, put some nice good lights in and keep minimal clutter in there…shelves, board racks, and chairs… oh my

Cheers

I duno the mobile option would be kinda cool… Drive down the beach, find a spot, shape a board and glass with suncure, surf it for a few days, drive down farther, repeat the process…

your customers might have a hard time finding you though

Hey Drew,

Do the tops of your racks unscrew so you could fit different types of tops on them? If so thats a really good idea. Once the bottom of the bucket gets locked in with resin and you glassed a longboard, switch to narrower heads and glass a shortboard without breaking up the buckets. I like it.

Hey Drew

Nice shed, now all you need is 5" of dust and resin on the floor.

Question, do you find the PVC pipe flexes or did you fill then with concrete too?

yep , I’ve seen it ! he’s not exaggerating . [makes gloss coating a bit sketchy at times]

$42!!

Two Home Depot buckets = $10 [$5 each?]

Stolen sand from the kids’ sandbox = $0 [sunk cost]

One warped 8’ x 2" x 3" taken from a neighbor’s trash = $0 [I get credit for recycling]

Six dry wall screws = $0.10

A few feet of 233 masking tape = $0.25

My total = $10.35

Also, your glassing rack looks quite strudy. I get to enjoy the extra challenge of a rickety, leaning, squeeking glassing rack. Ha! I do like your lighting system. I’ll have to copy that and maybe rebuild my glassing racks too

Another thing, red + white = pink [ARRGH]. I should have paid attention in grade school art.

Yup :), PM sent… the racks were pretty easy to make too… just waiting for the concrete to set was a pain.

Cost - Not one cent.

And enough materials left to make a stack more.

Tip: Don’t do your cement wet. Make your mix up without water and pack it in around your stands until it all holds togethor normally. Then pour water over it.

Pink board…Priceless!

Pink board…Priceless!

I was thinking about flying in to San Diego and heading straight out the Sunset Cliffs with that board, a neon green wetsuit, TWO leashes, the biggest set of kick fins I can find, a full-face helmet, and that Zinka sunblock slathered all over. I’ll paddle [kick] straight through the pack at Newbs [or is the Abs crowd more volitile?] and take off, kneeboarding, on the biggest sets, in front of the the heaviest locals I can find.

My guess, they steer clear of my freakdom and call the cops who proceed to shoot at me from the guard rail.

When I started the project i wanted something that was adaptable to different board shapes. Also I am planning on making a shaping attachemnt.

Using PVC pipe allows for a miriad of connecting options. In this case, you can simply pull the top coupler off the end of the tube and insert a different set-up, or to answer your question directly, the metal flange does indeed screw off.

I do find that ther’s a a hair more flex than I’d like. Version 2.o will have larger diameter tubing. 2" or larger. Only problem then is that you lose options coupling at the top. I might simply fill in a portion of the tubes with some cement to stiffen the existing tubes a bit.

Drew

hey drew,

Thats a good idea. Why not just fill up the pvc tubes with leftover resin? Doesnt have to be super strong and you’ll just waste the excess resin in the bucket. Cheaper than buying cement and you wont have to take up room in the trash can with the leftover resin. Just an idea. Thats definately a good idea for the screw off tops.
