I have been visiting Sways for a while now and decided it was time to make a contribution to the community.
This is a new board I’ve been working on called the Flounder, this is one strange fish. The board feels amaZING so fast, smoth and has a touch more control to handle the heavy hollow waves we often get down here.
The Flounder is inspired by Tom and John Wegener. It is a combination of my parabolic alaia, my traditional alaia and mini simmons hybrid.
Curious about the name , “Flounder”…why not halibut , or fortescue , or has someone already used those names ?..I want to make “The Sea Cuccumber” , but I havn’t got a design yet…names are important these days…
Nah works well both ways, but I reckon a natural footer wont like it.
The little keel on the heel side works well with the shorter curvier rail line to pull the board into the wave a little and give you a little hold/control through your back foot. It helps me to bottom turn and draw lines on my backhand and also gives me more control and drive on forehand cut backs.
The parabolic rail gives you plenty of hold and control on your forehand, but its not enough for me on my backhand, hence the asymmetric design.
For a natural footer I’d just invert the shape.
Haven’t trialled the board in anything too big yet, so I’m pretty excited to see how far I can push this board.
So for those of you still interested in this funky board. After 7 months of surfing it pretty consistently, I still love the board - the shape works really well and while the backhand goes well the parabolic rail and deep swallow give you fantastic control on your forehand!
Unfortunately I snapped the little keel out on Sunday, upside is that I now have the perfect chance to reshape another fin this time I’m going longer but shorter…
If any of you are interested in trying this board out or getting one for yourself give me a bell.
