Hi all,
I’m hoping to get some good feedback on how to cure a new board.
In the past when I’ve picked up a new custom board I’ve notice the glass to be a little soft - not wet or tacky - but an overall softness allowing easy pressure dings. To quickly harden it up I’ve place the board in the direct sun to heat it up a couple hours on each side. As you might expect it “cures” real quick. Giving it more thought I think this might be a mistake and may cause it to be more brittle and subject to dings.
What are your thoughts on how to allow it to cure properly - let it rest in a cool dry place a few days before riding it or ???
Any input greatly appreciated. I pick up a new custom board in a couple weeks.
Thanks, Denys
I always tell my customers to put them in a board bag out of the sunlight and leave them in their car.
The heating and cooling seems to speed it up a little.
I’m not talking about high heat.
Just what happens naturally.
I always suggest leaving the board somewhere warm for 2 weeks after it’s finished somewhere warm but out of direct sunlight if it’s polyester resin. All epoxies I make can be surfed when i hand them over as I post cure them beforehand. Check with the guy who’s made it you. If you buy a stocky from a surf shop chances are it’s well cured by the time it gets to you. I’m maybe wrong but polyester boards made with uv resin may not require the long cure time but can’t be sure as I never use it as it always rains here…cheers
