Hey guys, I just got a new board and I'm looking for some fin recommendations.
The board's 5'6" x 18 7/16 x 2 1/4, single wing cut in, swallow-tail, FCS tri fin.
I'm 5'10', 165~ lbs, an average ability surfer, mostly bottom turns, quick turns & floaters. Very rarely do I go vertical or try an air.
I'm currently running switching between k2.1s and jw-1s but I don't think these are the right style for my surfing. I've used both fins on boards with more standard shortboardish (5'10 x 18 x 2 3/16) dims and they work fine but for this board they either seem to drag too much on bottom turns and break away too easily when carving (I know, it probably sounds good but I don't really go for airs or vertical. I mainly focus on powerful turns and throwing as much spray as possible, completing turns too...out of vogue, I know..) I'm thinking maybe the pivot-y shape and flat foils (with little to no flex) on the jw-1/k2.1 are really keeping this board from its potential.
I also tried some MR 78s (having tried a twin fin before) and the fins broke out even worse, I couldn't complete a single turn.
(I even thought I had been out of the water too long and forgotten, or gotten rusty, with how to surf backside, things were getting so bad, but I took out my shortboard a few days ago and I could link up all kinds of turns, getting speed off bottom and projecting through turns and spraying from carving and top turns...so it's I guess its a learning curve with the new board.)
I know you all are well versed in fins types and combinations. I should also mention, I surf South Florida wind-slop/chop. Sometimes windswell. Rarely, but sometimes, northswell lined up pitching lefthand dredgers. I'm mainly looking for fins that will be sturdy, quick off the bottom and will allow me to carry the board through the turn and maybe project the turn a bit.
Any and all advice will be appreciated! Including any advice on surfing a 5'6 single wing cut-in successfully backside (if there's a trick or something, who kows?)
Thanks guys.
