I just brought home my new 6’4" egg and was suprised (and kinda angry) to find the left side fin (FCS plug) set about a half inch higher than the right. But they appear to be toed in correctly. A friend said to take it back and get it fixed. Before doing that, I wanted to see what you sway-peoples have to say about this. Will it’s being offset affect the boards performance adversely? Would a half inch make a noticable difference? I planned on riding it as a single fin anyways, but the FCS sides would be nice to tinker the ride with. Thank you for any help!

You paid your hard earned money for a quality surfboard, and it should satisfy your requirements in every way. You could say oh well and keep it, or get it fixed, but in the back of your mind, it will never be quite right. Good luck
If it was buoght off the rack…take it back! If it was a custom…take it back. The measure of the board builders integrety comes into question & they should want to make it right!

Before we had small/light enough fin boxes to justify more than 2, I made molds for inplace glass boxes. The winter of 1980 I brought a 5’10" to California with 4 fin boxes, the front pair were normal toe in . The pair behind/next to those were toed much more, I rode the crap out of that board,I tried the fins in back boxes, front boxes and combo’s of left front, right rear, etc. It rode differently with those combo’s, but you surf different backside than front, but if your board came from a commercial mfg., I would go back and bitch about some compensation for the error, fixing it will be cosmetically yuk. From what I’ve read you haven’t ridden the board yet, pretend there’s nothing wrong first.

One day I was riding and something felt a little different , I wasn’t sure what it was and kept on riding. When getting out of the water I discovered my left fin was missing. I had some unreal rides even though I had a system failure. Another time , my prized 9’3" Yater 3 stringer came from the factory w/ the fin box set wrong. The fin had a slight tilt to it , though I wouldn’t have noticed it if Yater hadn’t pointed it out. It rode fine. Sometimes it’s not worth the hassle it takes to redo work from a glass shop that is already running on a shoe string. In your case , You plan on single finning. So ? On the other hand it isn’t a big deal to drill out fcs plugs. You can do that at any time. Your probably dealing w/ some line worker who has no eyes , and / or a shaper who burned 1/2" and didn’t check . Either way , don’t make it a big deal. Easy for me to say!

Around a quarter inch off or less is understandable and doesn’t seem to make much of a difference but a half inch off is quite a bit. I know a couple of shop owners around here who would give you grief and claim you bought it as is. At the very least they need to know about it.
It depends on the offset of the side fins. Say you are a regular foot surfer…then for the offset to work the toe-side fin should be the one that is further towards the nose. Ever see an assymetrical slalom snowboard? The rails are offset to provide the maximum edge contact for both heel and toe side rails. The theory being that the center of gravity for your toeside is a few inches farther up the board…thus the offset. MAYBE, just MAYBE the same theory couls apply to your side-fins. BUT if the offset is wrong then, by god man throw them out. It’s like Joel Tudor says “One fin, One God, One country”.
I think I agree, ride it first; if it works ok, go back and get some dough. If it is unridable, insist on a new board. One-half an inch of fin placement will really affect the handling on any board. It might be good or it might be bad. How and where you surf are important factors too.
Hey, thanks for all the responses and insight. The board is all custom, shaped by Parmenter (all good), glassed by a new guy I wanted to try out (newborn baby, maybe his mind wasn’t on his work at the time), with an acid splash. Had to wait 2 months for it and I wasn’t too happy to see offset sides. I will let the glasser know about it. According to ep’s comment, if a redrill isn’t a big job then I’ll ride it first to see what it’s like. I plan on posting pix soon too.
Regardless, let them know about it. I would actually bring the board in, after you try it out. That way you can tell them about it and let them know you visually noticed the problem. Then tell them if it affects your ride. They need to know so this mishap won’t repeat itself again anytime soon.>>> Hey, thanks for all the responses and insight.
