I just broke my first and only board and I’m deciding what to replace it with. I mostly surf at Pacifica and the HMB-Jetty and I’m considering a single-fin noserider. I’ve gathered that these aren’t the best “longboard/walk-to-the-nose” waves but I’m a bigger guy and I want to learn longboard skills and catch a lot of waves, which is why I was thinking noserider. Should I rule-out the noserider b/c of where I surf? thanks
George, I also surf Linda Mar and sometimes Da Jetty in HMB. I surf a nice 9’0’’ x 19’’ x 22’’ x 15 1/2’’ x 2 7/8’’ square tail that works in 3-6ft. beach break conditions. I think you should go to ASD in Bulingame to get a great custom board. Bob Miller is the shaper and he would hook you up with the right goods. I got my board 4 months ago and it only cost my $560. That’s with volan cloth. A basic board (9’0’‘-9’4’') would cost around $500. It takes about 4 weeks to get the board. I think its worth the wait but if your in a rush then go over to Wise Surf Shop in S.F. and ask them to show you “The Regal” by Stewart Surfboards. Thats a great board for what you want. I think it runs around $640. Hope I helped some. ----Mikey

I’m 200 at 6’ and primarily ride 10’ boards both single and tri-fin: Velzy, Walden, Arrow, G&S, Yater, August, Harbour, ASD, and self shaped - I’ve ridden them all in Pacifica. Mikey is right Bob Miller at ASD makes some nice boards. I think you’ll be very happy with a Bob Miller board but don’t rule out some other options (I particularly can’t stand purchasing anything at Wise but I’ll just leave it at that). Maybe shape you’re own? Do you live in Pacifica or HMB? Feel free to send me an e-mail if you want further details.
Pacifica has its good and bad days, big and smalls days for sure. leave hear and the good part is that there is usually something to surf. It can be 2’ anklesnappers at Boat Docks or thumping, overhead rights at Rockaway. THe Regal the other guy mentioned might be a good choice, or a Harbour San O’ in the 10’ range but I wouldn’t surf either at Rockaway in the Winter unless your on a suicide mission. Either should work up to head high stuff which is really where shortboards come in anyway.

Thanks Drew - I’m very interested in shaping my own board but I don’t have much of a workshop - I’ve done sort-of big repairs in my yard but I guess I’d want something better for building a board. Also, I’m boardless I think I’d better buy so I don’t wear out my welcome borrowing friend’s boards. I live in Oakland but I get to the beack a few times/week. I work in SF so that helps. What suggestions were you thinking re: shaping a board? Thanks a lot

I’m also interested in a Michel Junod 10’ “Noserider” I looked at…

What suggestions were you thinking re: shaping a board?>>> Thanks a lot George, You can shape and glass a board in your backyard - it is just nice to do it in a dedicated room for many reasons. I feel compelled to tell you that in my humble opinion there is no better feeling than paddling out on your own creation. Do it from start to finish and work through the challenge of glassing and sanding. It will help develop your appreciation for the master craftsmen that toil within the business end of this avocation. It will also change the way you look at boards and the ultimate product. Put it another way, shaping your own stick kicks a$!! Trust me, it will change everything. Magoo P.S. If you want to hook up and give it a shot you’re more than welcome. I’m in SC a lot and can grab a blank for you if you want a basic single stringer.
