new fin idea

Ok mr Blakstah and other fin design gurus i have an idea that i got while being totally immersed in my wierd unusual mind. anyway what would happen if i made a fin with a flexible membrane. sorta like a plastic ,with some stiffness so it has a tendency to be in a certain shape but it’s filled with a fluid and it has a brace to keep the wide point in a certain area. this way the fin could make he most appropriate foil for what it was doing straight line etc. doe sit merit further progression into prototypes and possibly a small manufacutring if it wors for people who know what can work unlike the mass market

That a fine idea.

It’d be cool if Dale could make inflatable fins with an internal baffle system as well as some more rigid internal structure.

Keep thinking.

Sounds possible, but technically a bit difficult. I think it would have to end up pretty stiff and tight, as I wouldn’t want the precious pressures to wash off. Like a tight sail, or sailfin.

Blakestahs system would give a hint of similar performance I think.

Now if we could get the fin to flutter, that would be a breakthrough.

Yeah, I’ve thought of trying a “sail” fin, with a rigid perimeter and membrane in between, but considered it much more challenging an engineering problem.

Go for it.

Awwwww… the old thick and thin argument all over again? Hey Dale, can you make me a waterbed so I could snooze between sets? Make me a mold, let’s get busy.

How inappropriate, Mr. buyer beware… you of all people should know the true answer lies in the difference between stiff and floppy. OR is your thruster just tri-happy to see me? Go shake a dolphins hand and cut up some sushi… If you sand with your left hand now use your right.

When can an elephant fly? Last time I was on Expedition playing the great white Explorer, I prayed for a Goodyear… not Firestone. Groovin in the rain.

All the action is out on the rail. Hey Rich, it’s obvious you shake the sheets, I like your new quad! But where is the membrane or is it a new poem about nature and I’m supposed to fill in the space(s)? Is my mind the membrane, when I’m up to speed? Are you just feeding us some more of your cosmic bs, and what did Greg say? Enquiring minds want to know. But is knowledge only gained by living the question?

Extra Credit: Breathe and smile.

thats a good idea but i don’t think the bouyancy would be good if it was air. thats why i thought fluid, maybe pressurized sea water?

The fastest sailing craft have solid wing sails, what does that tell you?

If you were to try this, a single membrane rather than a filled volume would probably be more efficient, “tacking your fins” might be a bit wierd though?
