New Go To Longboard...

I’m in the market for a new Longboard that I’d like to use in a wide variety of East Coast conditions. I have been surfing for 20 plus years but mostly on shortboards. I’d like to go to full time longboarding and I’m thinking about the following boards: Harbour HP1, H3; Bing Pintail lightweight, Hansen lightweight pintail, Takayama DT3, In the Pink. I’m wide open and looking for comments on favorites of yours and or thoughts on the models I’ve mentioned. I’d like somthing that would be considered an all around shape/design. Thanks in advance for your comments and help as I begin the search.

Contact Mr. Jim Phillips, (760) 753-6299, and order custom. Jim is a former east coast surfing champion, but foremost, he is among the finest surfboard craftsman I have known. And I’ve know a few. He knows your waves, and can design for your needs, and your conditions.

i am geussing you are trying to go more high preformance longboarding. If thats right then those seem to be good boards. Jim Phillips is a great shaper and that is good advice.

the east coast is a big place…can you be a bit more specific?

I’m living about an hour away from Belmar, Manasquan, Pt. Pleasant, etc. I will surf the Jersey shore, the south shore of LI and I take a foray up to Nantucket(madaket) in mid to late August. Thanks for the input so far. I’d still be interested in hearing from those who own or have ridden anything I mentioned or have a go to longboard that they like for certain reasons. Looking forward to hearing more thoughts & insights.

my go-to board nowadays is a 9’1" C.C. Rider pintail. C.C. is a true east coast surfer, and he knows what works. he’s lived and shaped primarily in Rhode Island and in Florida (where he is now). the board is great – turns on a dime, catches every ripple, very maneuverable in shifty beachbreak conditions, and still noserides GREAT!

I’m very much a shortboarder, and for years surfed tri-fin and 2+1 longboards looking to pair agression with glide, and after much trial and error I found that I like my shortboarding to be shortboarding and my longboarding to be longboarding. Therefore, when the mood hits me to longboard I ride heavy singlefins with 50/50 to 60/40 rails to maximize glide and tip-time. My absolute favorite design is the Takayama Model-T, and the longboard I am currently riding is a TimeBomb (now just “TB”) that is very close to the Model T but with a few minor modifications for which I asked. It is not produced and promoted as a TB model, but I know it could be ordered as a custom. If you want to check it out sometime, I live in Lavallette, NJ.

For a performance board go 9’-0’ with concaves and 3 fins. for glide I’d go single fin, 50/50/ rails 9’-2" to 9’-6". A Yater spoon fills that bill for me. Hacky I live in OB 1 and surf brynmawr ave.

I bet our paths have crossed; I used to surf the Monterey/OB shores break often, and sometimes wind up at Brynmawr (but not in the last few months or so) . If you ever want to catch a session, definitely drop me a PM or email.

PS- I also agree with your recommendations
