I thought I would post some info on a useful new tool I recently invented, I call it… the “ultimate templating tool”.
Basically, this tool is a ‘c’ shaped hotwire that has multiple template related uses: First, it can be used in the place of a saw to cut out a boards outline; like a router would do, it simply follows the outline of the hardboard template. Its fast and very accurate. It’s second use is for scaling down outline sizes. “Need a board 1/2” to 2" smaller (all round)?" Just place the metal guides to you cut depth and cut away. And the third use, a rail band tool (Bert Burger style sandwich rails). Precise 1/2" cuts allow you to use an existing template, cut it out as usual, and then take off 1/2" in order to vacuum sandwich your rail band. Cool eh?
In terms of the tools specs:
-The ‘C’ measures 11"x8"x6"
-Its mouth/cutting capability is 5"
-2 rows of 4 guide holes spaced 1/2" apart (for metal rod guides)
-5"x5" Plexiglass foot (allows me to see what I’m cutting)
-30 gauge SS wire
-the ‘c’ is made out of 2"x1"s
I highly suggest building one to try it out… it’s cheap (under $20.00) and really effective!
Cheers,
Alex
