i saw the latest Longboarder Magazine. there is a shot of joel with a sweet board. it has a green deck w/ clear rails. how do you go about putting in a colored lam. for the deck?

Teddy: I’m going to do either a bottom inlay or a deck inlay like this on my next board. I’ve not seen the picture but you could use green acrylic paint as the easiest path. If you wanted to do it with resin then how about a resin tint or opaque inlay, trimmed to your rail lap line. Finish up with the 2nd layer of deck cloth done with regular clear lam resin. Think of it as the same technique you would use to do a cloth inlay, cloth or color layer trimmed neatly after applied to your blank then continue the lamination in clear as normal. Hope that helps. thanks tom…i have another one for ya i am doing a cheater gloss coat with lam. resin. here is what i have so far…2%wax, 2% styrene, and 2% cat. the wax i use has styrene already in it. is the the extra styrene to thin it out a little. or isn’t it necessary?

what’s your sanding technique? start with 320?

Teddy: Styrene is a resin thinner. I don’t use good glossing resin as I can’t get it. If you can get it I’d use “real” glossing resin but if not then start with your formula, it sounds like a starting point. I’m leaning towards a lot more styrene than 2% (even with what styrene is in the wax soln.) I’m using 5% and I’m going to up that even more. After removing the tape line and knocking off the zits I stard with 320 or 400 depending on how well I did. I only take mine to 600 then I use the flesh/brown tone 3M compound, usually twice. Surelustre is better if you can get it, the white stuff formulated for surfboards. I’m listening to Kokua, he does this for a living so I pay attention to what he’s saying. I get sand throughs with wet sanding at times and I do WAY to much hand sanding on gloss coats. It does take practice to do use a powerpad to do a good gloss rub out.
