Well the name Capt Mike came from an old surf buddy of mine Doug Wright that use to work for me. He would always get pissed when I had him do things exactly like I wanted. So it became a joke when the other emplyees would ask Doug how to do something, he’d say, “well go ask Capt Mike!”
He passed a way a few years ago so it kinda stuck. Keeps his memories alive.
Capt Mike - here’s a unorthodox method of cutting in vee I discovered here on swayglocks! Only dif in my techniques is I used a surform andblock…it works tho! According to orig poster, he claims he was able to cut in tail rocker and vee at the same time! Let me know what you think? I was / am impressed. The only thing
Saved of orig post is this pic !
Capt_mike - I don’t know how much vee he put in? But orig poster said he cuts his tail rocker and vee at same time w cuts…
That said, I tried it w surform for just the vee - which worked well for me! Before that I cross cut in a little tail rocker in three steps as I was using a stock planer…I used a pencil to map it out first. This helps me remember what my vision is in my head. A shaper here clued me in on using a pencil to set stuff up - which helps…
I myself am not crazy about tons of vee. So I just put in 1/8" between my twin fins…out my tail block Iet it carry 1/8" out my swallow tail tips, in front of fins moving upboard my vee gradually fades to zero @ 1/3 the length of board. I’m just garage guy, but I built a thruster once where I put 1/4" of vee in and my buyer of board loved it! I don’t know what my grand plans were there? I went w an eighth!? Have fun!
Surfed Blackies Today! It was on fire. 3-4ft with bigger sets. No doubt about it I gotta get my board done and stop riding this flat bottom hard rail Bruce Jone Hybrid! Just could get my quota of wave and short boarders everywhere…No offense! I finally finished my rocker measuring template so I can start now.
Glad to hear you’re back at it. While I haven’t shaped a board in at least ten years, I never stopped surfing. I will be 65 in about three months. My longboard/noserider is 8’.
My daily driver in waist+ waves is a 6’3" single fin.
Modern fish are a lot of fun to make. I prefer the speeddialer fin set-up as it gives a looseness and cutback ability that you just don’t get with keels. PM me if you would like the fin locations. The fin sets arn’t cheap, but you can make your own if you go with FCS Fusion plugs. I have made these from 5’6" up to 6"2" (although Reverb says they arn’t fish at that length, LOL). I can post up a pic or two if you would like to see mine! Just my 2c…
Well guys got all my shaping stuff together, I’m ready to go back to it and shape myself a 9’6" noserider. I will probably shape it either Wednesday afternoon or Thursday. Should I create a post of my progress? I’m still trying to figure out how I want the T-Band done. I wanted a Hibiscus floral 4 inch wide wrap but it would really be difficult to get it to wrap evenly during the glassing. I’m leaning toward air brushing instead but having trouble finding a pattern.
