New Projects & Resin Fin Promised

This was the wood/resin D-Fin that we were working on and I promised I would post pictures.

Troy

One other project. Resin swirl tips for one of our fish customs.

Troy

Last one. A tailblock for our pinstriper Igor. We sealed in his favorite (worn out) pinstriping brush in his new custom.

Troy

that’s so cool! i love the paintbrush and that fin is gorgeous.

all your work is sooo beautiful! haha.

JC On a Stick…that is the most amazing work i have ever seen. You are truly a master craftsman and artiste.

What the hell…!!!

I can’t imagine how many hours of work for “building” that fin.

Wow, your work always blows my mind, but this time it actually took my breath away, I’m actually drewling.

Beautiful stuff, how is that even possible???

You guys do beautiful work – thanks for posting!

We appreciate all the kind comments. We have a few more in the works and I will try and follow one through the process with pictures if I get the time.

Fins and boards beautiful! I’d be proud to wear the colour customized shoes in your avatar, LOL! Wish I could see the colours in the tail tips on that fish a bit better. Are they solid resin? Could be my bad vision (or overactive imagination) but is that the reflection of your head and the sky and clouds in the picture on the right of the one of the tips on that fish? (ouch, that was a horrible sentence)

We capped the end with a dark opaque color, usually black so you don’t see the raw foam end. The tips on the fish are actually clear resin with black and grey, to match the board, slightly swirled through so you still see some clear areas. My picture taking ability or camera sucks but hopefully you get an idea of what we are attempting. One day I will buy a decent camera and learn how to use it.

Troy

Awesome! I get the picture now. Pretty much like the tail of Igor’s board up there, except it’s the tips on the fish. Do you do those (fish and tails like Igor’s) like a wooden tail block? I guess different people have different techniques - shaping it either before or after the board is done…

On the picture taking, I’m no whiz but I play around a bit with my camera. The other pictures - the big D fin and Igor’s board came out awesome, so I’m not thinking it’s the camera or your picture taking skills. The D fin’s artwork was shown off by having the sun shine through it, and Igor’s board had some good light showing through it as well. The pictures of the fish almost looked like they had a blue-ish tint to them (though that could just be me). Sort of leads me to think it was either a lighting issue or a camera setting… Either way, the pictures are still worth a thousand words. All awesome! Thanks for sharing Troy…

Hey Waxfoot,

Austin lamniates the bottom first then uses a skil saw to cut off the tails. He resins on the blocks (wood or resin) and then final sands them to shape. With the top lam layer he wraps the tail all the way around the new tail sections to preserve strength.

Yep definitely lighting is a major issue. Thanks for all the comments.

Troy

Hey saunders I remember you did a post showing some past resin tail blocks with an explanation of hwo you made them, any chance of reserecting the link to that post?

Hey Woody,

When I get a spare moment I will try and snap some photos to go along with an explaination.

Troy

Thanks I’d really appreciate that

We finished a couple more fins this weekend. These were already in production so I couldn’t do the start to finish thing but I will do it with the next batch. The one with the ebony wood came out killer. The green diamonds are semi-opaque and the blue diamonds are a blue tint. No veneer is used it is solid pieces glued together.

Troy

Wow! Really. Wow.

Nice selection of woods and colors.

Since this is Swaylocks why don’t you show us how you make them?

Awesome!! Thanks for sharing Troy! My favorite is the one on the upper right, with the two deep blue stripes of that fancy resin work of yours. Keep 'em coming! Mahalo nui…

[obproud - he mentioned in his post that these were already in production so he couldn’t do a start to finish, but would in the next set…]
