I’m looking to get a mod quad fish shaped for me soon. Similar to a Piranha or Round Nose Fish. I would appreciate some input.
Fins:
What is the best fin system on these boards? Lokbox or Futures? I have heard complaints about the Future quad sets. Are the Lokbox sets preferred?
Dimensions:
I’m 6ft, 41yrs and 168lbs without wetsuit. I surf in WA state and I’m looking for a small wave board for summer beachbreak and mellow local points. The last few years I have been transistioning down from a 9ft longboard. I have been successfully riding an light 8ft trifin. I also have a 6’ 9" pintailed tri that I ride OK in stronger surf but have struggled in the smaller stuff. Thus, the fish…
I’m 6’5" 180 and 45 YO. My quad fish is pretty traditional in outline at 6’2" X 23" X 2-5/8" with a 14-5/8" tail. It’s concave forward to double concave just forward of the fins and vee out the tail. I’ve got LokBox. I’m currently running Next Generation X-4 forward and Next Generation X-2 shorts in back. It’s very quick with lots of punch and drive. Get’s a little sketchy in the steep. With Pavel Turbo’s the board is more pivoty. But, over all it’s a very fun board for small to medium and clean conditions.
I had a Piranha and didn’t like it one bit. Lots of people do, though.
I would recommend a keel fin fish, a little more traditional, being a LBer I guess you’re more of a down-the-line surfer than a vertical one. I love my fish, and seldom miss my longboard when I’m riding it.
@ your size you can probably get away with a 5’8" or a 5’10", around 21" wide and 2.5" thick.
I’m 6’3", 190 lbs and mine is 6’0"x21"x2"5/8, and sometimes I think I could use less foam (and I’m not young and/or a good surfer)
also, a trad. fish is probably the easiest board to shape, you could consider making it yourself, I can guarantee you’ll like it soo much more.
