New Shape!!

Hey guys-

I had about a gallon and a half of resin left from my last few projects, so i figured i might as well use some up

so i bought some fiberglass, and a blank from greenlight, and five standard fin boxes and fins from the surf source.

I decided to go with a similar idea to Rick Malwitz’s board here: 034_Sultan | Flickr

except my version is a bit bigger (6’6" x 22" x 3") because im a bigger guy. Check it out so far!

I like the looks of it.  I’m guessing those wings allow you to keep more width as you get closer to the tail.  What do you think the advantage will be?  They look cool.

Im thinking im gonna enjoy this build thread, go at it mate

You are partially correct. Wings are meant to make a board look cool, and to piss off the glasser.

Make sure you put channels in the bottom too!

And flame graphics, dey helps you paddle faster.

Looks smilar to one I made for a friend last year. He prefers to ride it with larger twin fins and a small trailer. It works well as a quad too. Great all around design, mine was loosely based on Rusty's Dwart (Double Wing And Round Tail). This one is a 5'10"

Needs more fin boxes!!!

Wings in my exp create a release point in tail that helps make a board feel looser…
I’ve owned several of them! one a double winged rp 6’2" x 20 3/4 " shortboard, the other a wingle winged rp, and the other a stinger. Finally my last one a double winged swallow thruster! This board felt awsum fyi! Last time I took it out was at steamer lane in santa cruz cali. Anyhow it was a 6’3" double winged swallow- with a very small swallow at the back… Anyhow, board had an ability to make tight pivoty turns in the pocket, or on the flats…also, these boards where the rage in the mid eighties-and prob still common in the early 90’s. Why they didn’t catch on- that I don’t know?! Would I ever buy or shape another? Ofcourse I would. Wings are the feature that help loosen up the tail-which makes for a funner/free r’ feeling board. I think you’ll really enjoy these boards!

Shapaholic2011,

Great explanation!  Is there a general rule about placement and the amount of decrease in width occuring behind them?

I going to say that it looked a lot like a “dwart”, which is a good thing. I love those boards. I too, would love to shape one. Yours looks promising

Thanks for all the comments guys, sorry i havent gotten on here sooner, ive just been crazy busy lately and i havent even gotten a chance to touch the board until today, But i cut the outline out with a jigsaw, and trued up the sides, i wanted to know what you guys thought would be good rocker heights. i was thinking of a relatively flat bottom, with just a little rocker. check it out!

@wbrame: I just like the looks of wings, but i also think they will give the board a little more drive, and basically everything that shapaholic said.
