Guys - Sharpie brand now has WATER BASED PAINT PENS which they call “Poster Paint” and they come in 4 different point sizes/nibs & many colors.
Also today I found a good fellow old guy who will sell to surf shops, & maybe individuals,<span style="font-weight:bold">Ron Sobel,</span>LA(the Valley),Standard Office Products,CA<span style="font-weight:bold"> 818-710-8484 email </span><a href="mailto:oakmore@earthlink.net" class="bb-url"><span style="font-weight:bold">oakmore@earthlink.net</span></a><span style="font-weight:bold"> </span>put<span style="font-weight:bold"> Sharpie Surf Paint in subject</span> line
The parent company is Sanford Corp. but it has a minimum order of $20,ooo- they are at 800-323-0749
Ron will accept payment by Pay Pal & /or credit card and will ship to Hawaii or worldwide
I stumbled on this trail in Sept., when I first learned of the new Sharpie product in a "Pearl" Art& Craft store- a US chain in LA,Huntington Beach,SF,NYC & FL
W- the new Sharpie brand “POSTER PAINT” water based paint pens work perfectlly-the same as the better known ZIG or POSCA, and are MUCH easier to find/buy than others
In LA & Huntington they are at PEARL Art & Craft stores-
also Wal Mart now has a cheapo brand of water based pens in the sewing /crafts area, but do recommend the Sharpie’s - did a 9 ’ longboard
that was a quick reply, i can tell u r now a big fan of these markers. question: did u use them ontop of the finished board or under one of the coats? i want to just use it on an already glassed board.any tips on how to go about doign this?
W one can paint on top of a finished board- roughen it first with some not too coarse sandpaper. After painting you can/must/should spray it with Acrylic Spray coat, then wax over that & surf it if the board is to be surfed on
After painting you could also take it & have a coat of resin or "hot coat"/gloss coat put on it
Also I did put Michelangelo’s God & Snoopy, as line drawings, in black, under one coat of 6 oz fiberglass
I mention line drawings, since heavy paint between fiberglass layers probably is not good, glass may delaminate- PAINT on Blank OK, but difficult- READ ARCHIVED POSTS of the PAST, although I tried that here, and that was a bit difficult to put together disjointed accounts of how to paint- there are guys here who are so expert they sometimes, sometimes don’t put in 1 spot the basics, which they know all aobut & do in their sleep.
SEE The SITE of WORLd’s MOST FAMOUS Current SurfBoard PAINTER DREW BROPHY at www.drewbrophy.com - he has a section at the site on how to paint a board- I met him & his wife at a demo and he paints mostly on the top of finished boards- he may be under contract to use Posca pens, he did not even know of Sharpie Pens which came out just earlier this year of 04- I am not in any way associated with Sharpie- and not a surf biz professional, unlikew many here- security guard /musician
HEAR FREE music by me at www.download.com/stevemccambridge which has 2 Xmas songs and my guitar instrumental “SURF BEAT” see that Drew brophy site!
thanks for all the good tips! im gonna give the marker on glass with acrylic finish a try on an old board to see how it holds up after a few surfs. Know any shapers in the Miami Florida area willing to show a young guy some tricks?
Anyone used these directly on the foam? i just saw them at a art supply store, and they are much cheaper than posca pens. i use the pens to do my pinlines/borders on paintjobs. thanks, sean
