" Question - What is the best way to make fin templates? "
hi mate !
I generally draw them onto cardboard. Whatever curves and sizes you like the look of , and then you can always modify them [narrower , taller , shorter , wider , more upright , more ‘swept back’ ]. Maybe have a look at existing commercial fins , to see what appeals to you , for a starting point …
Are you making your mal a single fin ?
if so , if you put in a fin box , you can buy an assortment of single fins over time , and try them out , till you find what works best for you …and your style …and , the waves you will mostly be riding .
surfers from new york featured in one of andrew kidman’s movies ,
and also , in one of the tom curren movies from the ? 1990s ? , too ? [it might have been ‘searching for tom curren’ , or ‘beyond the boundaries’ , maybe , when he rides a really old fish on one of the beaches there , after buying it in a shop there …]
let me know how you go with the fin , eh ? [you can private message me here , if you like ?]
I have some premade templates if you’re looking to dive in (see website below). Definitely important, thought, to understand the fundamentals and other aspects of board design besides outlines, so do your homework/research!
I think the best first move would be to feel up a board that you’ve ridden that surfs how you like. Anaylize that board’s design to see what/how/where the design aspects come into play. Start with broad design aspects and move towards the details. And/or get yourself into a surfshop, feel up some boards and ask some design questions.
The internet has been known to help now and again too!
Wow! Very nice site! Thank you. What I am really looking for is to make a tri fin jig(for futures) and a 10" single fin jig(Box) out of plywood as well. I will check out the templates on the site as their are alot of great ones for boards and fins as well. Thank you!
