Hi I’m looking for a mentor someone I can watch to shape and glass. I’m a self taught builder like i’m sure many are and I’ve been researching and researching and it has now comes down to learning by seeing and doing.
I’m actually making skimboards, bellyboards, and paipos. I’m looking to whoever can get me started in the right direction. I’m using old surfboards stripping and reshaping them into smaller usable watercrafts. My theory behind it all is to breath new life into old boards.
If there is anyone in the San Francisco area or Peninsula I’d appreciate any advice or guidance.
That would be awesome. I’ve been reading up alot and I would love to see with my own eyes and ask a couple questions.
I’ve already started shaping my first skim. I’m applying a lot of surfboard design and theory to my boards. I plan on glassing using epoxy so this would be perfect. Thanks!
Seems for paipos and skims, all you need is marine ply and varnish.
Consider homedepot single styrofoam for bellyboard and thin kneeboards.
I was Wise’s shaper from '73 thru 77, and you can see one of my boards in the downstairs, back of the shop. The green and yellow 7’3"er that I DID NOT glass. PeeWee did.
I prefer foam skimboards and I know paipos can be made of marine ply as well…but I just wanted to save some boards from being tossed out and turn them back into usable watercrafts. I get to hone my skills and save one less board from filling a land fill…it’s kind of like recycling.
