I’m new to this forum and to the world of surfboard making. I fix all my own dings which I really enjoy doing and am looking for a summer project to get me through those endless summer flat days. So I want to make a surfboard. I would love to surf a board I have made and I am close friends with my shaper so I can get advice there. Its a bit daunting, but I figure if I can at least make the board surfable then I would be more than happy as I can see myself making more if the first one is not a complete dogs breakfast. Is a longboard too hard for a first board? I ride longboards and retro single fins.
Thanks very much and look forward to posting my progress and learning from you guys/gals here
Mate, from good ol’e WA, currently in Freo. Surf mainly Cables when its breaking, otherwise inside cables. Avoid Iso’s like the plague. Sometimes beachies at Leighton. Down south when I can and Ders when I can too. Been some good swell over the last couple of weeks hey! HAve you made many boards? Is it mega hard? Im good friends with Len Dibben and I mights be able to get some advice from him and maybe scam some materials etc. Don’t really know where to start. Would love to make a longboard say around 9’4 to compliment my 10’ log. Maybe something a bit lighter and thinner for larger waves? or should is start off small? I love a good project and get a buzz of doing things for myself and even fixing dings gives me enormous satisfaction! Currently just finishing a large tail ding on my log. Turned out alright but I know its far removed from making a whole board - looking forward to giving it a red-hot go!.
Hey hicksy give us a yell next year if there is a get together the cook wants to see another ‘proper’ sunset and I can’t afford to go to the maldives. but wa looks good.
