No more surfing in France - Game over ... *PIC*

This is it, all the oil from sunken tanker has now arrived on the french basque and landes coast … The disaster has already begun : dead birds and dolphins found on the beach, fishing and oyster activities in economic trouble … Police banned public access to the beach : the type of oil the sea pukes on the coast is highly cancerigen and should not be breathed or hand touched … Worst of all : it’s only the beggining and experts expect this to last for months … Sounds like a bad movie, doesn’t it ? But sadly it 's not fiction, it’s really happening.

Worst of all : it’s only the beggining and experts expect this to last for > months …>>> Sounds like a bad movie, doesn’t it ? But sadly it 's not fiction, it’s > really happening. Small consolation at the moment, but (assuming something is done about the shipwreck) it will all clear up in time and the oceans and beaches will recover. It might take as long as a few months or a couple of years, which could be devastating in the life of a young surfer and to economic interests, but in the larger picture things will return to normal. How the surfers of affected areas deal with the situation and interuption to their surfing lives may define them as people. Strength comes from facing adversity.

You’ve got to be kidding ! No silver lining here. Just an ECOLOGICAL CATASTROPHE.

Nels ! You’ve got to be kidding !>>> No silver lining here.>>> Just an ECOLOGICAL CATASTROPHE. No, I didn’t mean there was a silver lining, and yes, it’s an eco-catastrophe…but not an Eco-Apocalypse. I don’t know much about the supposed total-toxicity of this particular oil stuff - and if that’s something that gets into the food chain somehow then that’s really bad. But if not, the natural part will return to pretty much the way it was - it happened that way in Santa Barbara after the huge 1969 (?) oil rig spill. And after that debacle California created the California Coastal Commission, which has done a ton of good (despite a lot of controversy), and many would say it was a watershed moment for the whole ecological movement in the U.S. Not a silver lining, but a defining moment…the defining coming from the actions/reactions of the citizens of the affected area. Game not over - game just starting. Nels

ECOLOGICAL CATASTROPHE. Is what it is… Nels just do a Google search on Oil Spills… It will take years if not decades to restore the french Ecosystem… I remember the tar balls on the beach in SB all the way into the late 70’s>>> Game not over - game just starting.>>> The battle is just started and will last way into the future… I only hope we never have one happen here in Washington. The Goverment is always looking at ways to make budget cuts and oil spill clean up programs are being cut how screwed up is that?? That’s what our new goverment thinks about oil spills… They think if it happens it will all go away on it’s own??? Think about Alaska and how long they have had to deal with clean up… As far as i know this spill is much bigger. http://surfnwsc.com

ECOLOGICAL CATASTROPHE. Is what it is… Nels just do a Google search on > Oil Spills… It will take years if not decades to restore the french > Ecosystem… Absolutely right about taking years to get total restoration…but it will happen as opposed to something like horrid nuclear radiation with half-lives of thousands of killing years.>>> I remember the tar balls on the beach in SB all the way into the late 70’s Rob, there’s STILL tar ball on the beaches in SB and Ventura Counties - but they are naturally occuring seeps from offshore oil deposits. Ancient indigineous (Indigians?) used this seepage to waterproof/caulk their boats. The thing is that when that oil well blowout happened the local beaches were innundated with oil and resulting sea/bird life casualties. I recall hearing that the petrochems involved rotted stitching on wetsuits of the day. But it recovered. All I’m saying is that things are terrible in France right now, but they will get better. And now, when the problems are there at their worst, is the time and opportunity to use heightened awareness to fix what is allowing this to happen. Maybe it’s thin single hulled oil tankers, navigation lanes, whatever…and then how about those big beautiful rivers flowing out to sea after draining the industrial and agricultural slag of half of Europe?>>> The Goverment is always looking at ways to make budget cuts and oil spill > clean up programs are being cut how screwed up is that?? Totally screwed up.

do get better . … everything else said is true too . … but supposedly whenever I talk to older people around here . . .supposedly the water and the air were worse years ago . … I don’t remember that . … but supposedly it’s true . … which concludes that some of the ecological beaurocrats that have been established at times of crisis . . HAVE made a difference. Speaking of nuclear . ugh … chernobyl is having a 10 billion ton STEEL encasing lowered over its big-huge-ugly-rotting-nuking-seepage-concrete-crumbling-sarcophagus. THERE’s a catastrophe that doesn’t get better too well. Let’s encourage more Koreans to take up surfing . …is there any surf in Korea?? ET C if you read this . … need to see.

Small contribution to solve this problem? http://www.surfrider.org/snowrider/Snowrider3.html
