No to poly on HWS??

confused!

I am close to starting my first HWS ( as soon as i sort out AKU which has ceased to work)  , any way i was in a local shapers shop the other day asking about costs of glassing the HWS once i had made it ! He was adamant that no way would he glass it ( delamination ) . What is the story!! ci realise that epoxy sticks better but isnt poly stilla viable glassing option. This guy suggessted a two pack epoxy type finish was motre than adequate, surely for a Hws a layer of 4oz is required???

all advice welcome

thanks Tim

I build hws.  I always glass with epoxy, gloss with poly.  4 oz. is pretty standard, I've switched to 6 lately just because I like working with it better.  I've heard horror stories about poly reacting with oils in the wood and not hardening properly.  I had two boards I sealed with poly.  One never set up fully, and later, half the board delaminated.  I haven't had any problems glassing with RR epoxy.  Hot coat with epoxy.  Gloss with poly, if desired.

I have glassed/hot coated epoxy (both MAS and RR) and then glossed with poly.

I am not allowed to gloss with poly anymore – it stunk up the house once and she came home a little earlier than expected… :frowning:

Anyway, with RR, I think I can laminate and hot coat on a HWS and get a good looking board.

Location matters. Update your profile. Brand of resin matters. Who you know and who you network with will matter. Start networking with people in your area. I have a great supplier for Resin Research. I get a good price.I split 3 gallon kits with people like Gdaddy and Surf4fins.  It's warm where I live. I have a good friend who lives 300 miles north of me. My friend up north has different methods and opinions. He's more open to different products. We're spoiled in San Diego County with warm dry weather...perfect for epoxy glassing with RR......I'm not building wood surfboards but I've fixed them with both poly and epoxy. PeteC sells a killer vent for hollow boards....Greenlight has one too.............

ive never glassed glassed a HWS before but i have glassed a solid balsa board before with poly and it came out great, i did that about a year and a half ago and the customer is still having alot of fun on it[img_assist|nid=1061934|title=balsa board|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=378|height=256]
