Ok experts…need some advice. I’m making a board from a friend and he wants a fin box…I’ve never done one…I’ve always glassed on my fins. The board is a Hollow wood with solid balsa at the tail. How thick does it have to be placed? 5 inches form the tail, the board is 1 1/8 inches thick. My box I’m using is 1 inch deep…that only leaves me with 1/8 of deck…is that enough? I will be glassing in with 6oz and epoxy. Do I have to use the whole inch of fin box or can i rout 3/4inch deep and grind the rest of the box off?
I thought I just responded to this on another thread. I'm not an expert, so maybe I shouldn't be responding on this thread!
The box is 1" deep, the tail where the box goes is 1 1/8" deep. What is the problem exactly? If the box was deeper than the tail then I could see where you might have a problem, but why would you want to grind a quarter inch off a perfectly good fin box that you have room for?
You do know these things are regularly put into foam boards, and that wood is stronger than foam, right?
Unless I'm missing something, why would you not just router out for the fin box and install it?
It is physically possible to grind the box… BUT… the fin base may protrude and make everything look like shit… 1/8 is enough… If fustures boxes routed into ultralight foam with less than 1/8th of foam/stringer dont rip out that beast wont have any issues… once its all together… it holds itself together… Dont worry… Just do it !!!
