Ill be headin to oahu (first time) on thursday the 8th. Ill be staying in kailua for a little with a relative, but definately will make a journey up to the north shore. Anyone have any information on house/condo rentals up there??? probably looking for a couple nights… but if its a good rate, might rent for a week. Any tips for first-timers??? ive heard the falls are a cool little hike… interested on other scenic spots. (bringing photo gear). I also am bringing a water housing… so i hope to get some good shots.
Anyone have helpful info on oahu dives?? looking to do a night dive, and ive heard that turtle town? is cool.
thanks in advance for any helpful knowledge. Ill post some of the better pics for ya’ll when i get back. THANK YOU
Living on Oahu I’ve never had to seek rentals on the north shore, but you might want to do a search on Backpackers Hawaii and Ke Iki Bungalows, both near the Shark’s Cove/Waimea Bay area. The turtle town you mentioned sounds like the area of Laniakea Beach (the first beach you come to after leaving Haleiwa headed north toward Waimea Bay) that the turtles usually beach themselves at near the north end of the beach near the ironwood trees. Besides Waimea Falls, you might want to check out the heiau (ancient Hawaiian burial ground) up on the hill above the bay in Pupukea Heights. You can get there by turning up the road at Foodland market. There’s a nice view overlooking the bay there. If you go to Haleiwa, Alii Beach Park, you should be able to find Carve Nalu there. I think he’s there in the early morning. Look for the “Blue Tent Crew” canopy there, ask for Blane.
looking to buy a board or two when i arrive this weekend. Im about 6’2" and 190lbs. looking to pick up a shorty/fish and possibly a log (if i can afford it). Possibly will sell after two weeks or might take them back with me… depends if i get too attached. found a few on craigslist…
But im looking for a shop that might let me buy it and sell it back for a loss of less than 100$ (50-75 ideally) (assuming my fat ass doesn’t buckle it or what not)
most board rentals ive come across are popouts or softtops. not what im looking for really. thanks for any help!!
Hey Cambell
Couple of bits for ya:
If you want to rent, no need to go to the North Shore for that. The main shop all the tourists go to is “Surf and Sea” in Haleiwa and they rake folks over the coals. Wayyyy expensive. They probably have the largest selection on the NS but you pay for it. Down the road in Haleiwa town there are lots of shops. I haven’t bought or rented anything there in a long time so I can’t make any recommendations.
In Kailua you can rent a pop-out at “Hawaiian Island Ocean Sports” (in the same building as H.I.C.). He’s got all sizes of South Points and NSP’s. He also sells them for pretty good prices. Across the street is “Kimos Surf Shop”. Not sure if he’ll be back before you get here (he’s conducting “surf” research in Bali I heard) but he’s got the best selection of custom boards (new and used) I’ve seen in a long time. A bit pricey, but some real nice boards and he’s a super cool guy.
I’m also selling my South Point 9’6" for $400 if you’re interested.
Have fun!
Backpackers is definitely the cheapest way to go. Never had to stay there but heard it was like $25 a night. For used boards check out Sharks Cove surfshop down the street past Foodland. I drive past there everyday to work and they always have a pretty big selection. They were overflowing onto their grass when all the pros left town. Might get some deals as the season is winding down. Check out craigslist also. There’s always logs for sale.
