Observations @ Sacred Craft.

Thanks for ID’ing Don Bill.  I uploaded these snapshots after I got home last night (early this morning) and didn’t look very closely as I did.  I’ve got tons more coming after I have a chance to regain consciousness.  It was really nice seeing you there.  I’m sorry we didn’t have more time to catch up, but you know how that goes at these things.  You are looking great.  I’m glad to see you’ve recovered so quickly.  Next time I’m down we’ll have to spend some time hanging out.

Hey surfding - I would have been stoked to know it was you.  Maybe next time we all wear armbands or something to identify us.

I spoke to a packed house (standing room only) which surprised the hell out of me.  People were even taking notes!  Most were newbies and folks who had never bought a custom board, just the audience I had intended the talk for.  Thanks to Brad "Vana White" Lally for providing the much needed third and fourth hands.

It was nice to catch up with folks I only see a few times a year.  KP, Brian Hilbers and Manny Caro at the Hull Stand.  It's quite an experience to watch those guys go through their paces.  Marc Andrieni is such a class act.  I asked him to check out a my balsa board and he schlepped all the way accross the hall to have a look.  I got to meet pjd and put a face behind the handle.

If there was a theme this year it was "finless".  Lots of channel sculptured goodness (not sure they will work...but its all good).  Bob Mitzven shaped a really nice channel bottom just for shits and grins and got two orders for Mark II and Mark III.  It was a gas listening in to Ian Cairns and Reno reminisce about breaking down the door at the North Shore.

Congrats to Scott Bass for putting on a great show!  So much stoke!

any compsand stuff, apart from FIrewire?

We were slammed in the Brewer booth so I didn't get to see much of what else was going on, but we had a killer 10' Brewer / Hess gun that Danny brought down.  If you were there and missed it... it was on the corner of our booth right by the shape-off area.  Ten feet of campsand perfection.  I'm saving my pennies so I can eventually have my own.

I did get a chance to see the bad-ass rising sun board that Jim the Genius made.  Wow... what a piece of art that sucker is.  Jim, you rock.  That was in Rusty's booth near the gun Dick shaped for him a few months back - from the Surfer's Journal story.

wow, Brewer,s gun…for serious waves…

any young progressive shaper on the show?

John Cherry’s work is sick… fin porn please!!

cheers!

There were some Sunova's out by the front door.  Very interesting to see how the finish is done on the noses and decks.  They looked like all one length of wood, i.e. not like Pergo.  Extremely thin noses on the longboards!

I flat out love the Sacred Craft show. Where else can you go and see and meet all of these fabulous people! The vibe is always great and it only costs five buck. The highlight for me was to find out through the surfboard appraisal area that Michael Armstrong  was the person that shaped my Oak Street surfboard back in the seventies and I got to meet Mark Richards and get a signed poster from him.

Another great show by Bassey. The guy was taking heaps of abuse elsewhere for popouts this, and booth costs that, I hope he gets the message that his efforts are appreciated by a huge majority of craftsmen and board nerds alike. I brought a buddy’s Da Cat for appraisal on Saturday, which for someone that doesn’t build boards was a killer way for me to feel involved in the show. Bob Mitsven’s last minute finless blank was just insane, Cooper’s glasswork and foils ditto. I had to take my 10 year old back to mom so I could kill the entire day at the show. Fantastic event, proud to be a surfer this weekend.

John Cherry's work really needs to be seen in person and up close to appreciate the quality.  I had seen his website before and was so taken that I emailed him.  A couple of his fins literally had me choked up and I told him so.

I've seen other beautiful wood fins, Richard McCormick's and Austin's come immediately to mind, but John Cherry's are up there with the very best.

Fins are but a part of his talent.

Not to take a thing away from anyone else... he was at the show which is what this thread is about.

Totally true with regards to the fins. I stood there just sorta slack-jawed. One of John’s D fins is on a JP Pig that I’m riding at the moment and people will gather around my truck and point and stuff in the lot. The fact that you “choked up” over fins tells me your a good dude sir.

Not a lot of compsand action there but I got a chance to rub down all the Sunovas.  It was nice to check them out after seeing them here.  I was surprised how thin they were.  I saw a lot of eps blanks and boards with different carbon, carbon and Kevlar, and Kevlar rails.  I talked with Dan Thomson for a while, he has an interesting direction going with performance short boards.

I think this one got best of show.

llilibel03,

I forgot to mention, after spending half a day and rubbing down at least 100 boards, I am pretty stoked with the current compsand direction I am headed in.  If I got anything from the show aside from the stoke and inspiration, it would be to try thinning out my next one (1.5 – 2).

So, you’re saying Bass is actually involved in something that’s worthwhile? I’m stunned.

Why there we go, I was wondering how long it would take. He’s a friend, and a nice guy and I’m glad to know him.

sorry i missed that one…sounds like everyone  got stoked !

oh well, back to the dust bowl !!!lol.

Why?

I’ve been focusing more on the build and less on the foil to achieve the weight/strength/flex I was after.
After
inspecting the Sunovas I am feeling better about sub 2 boards.  There
was one 1.25 (slight concave deck) that felt very nice.  All the Tomo
boards were very thin as well.  I saw a lot of thinner boards with
wider outlines this time.  Fuller nose and tail, thinner all over with
stronger builds.

Did any body get a tail width on any Daniel tompson board? guesstimate?

what’s the skinny on the tomo boards…really straight outlines, wide tails, channels, lazers?
